Hey Dreaminghawk thanks for the info. I know what you mean abt a female ancester that is hard to find her surname, seems I got alot of that too:confused: On my Harts, they are everywhere but I can’t get past Samuel Hart b 1792 VA( maybe PA) He was in Alleghany VA when his dau. was born in 1838. I found it kinda ironic she was born around the time of “Trail Of Tears”. Anyway, seems most all of my ancesters eventually landed in Nicolas WVA. My Grandpa was born there, then moved to IN when he was a boy. Speaking of Hart–Melungeon, wonder if your Harts and mine have a connection? Hey Carolyn how ya doin? Talk to you all later!! Peace:) Greydove

Thanks for asking. With the holidays and still all my daily monkeys on my back my research time in my “free” time seems to have vanished. 🙁
Maybe after the holidays things will slow down and I can get back at it with more time.
I must say the more I read of the Melungeon people living among the Saponi the more the characteristics of this culture of peoples are sure fitting the characteristics of my line of Fugates.
I’ve always “felt” that it surely was more than one person in the Fugate line to influence the darker skin and a lot of natural curly hair even in children being born in this generation. As you would “think” just one Indian woman would not still be influencing a family almost 200 years later so strongly. But I’ve been wrong before. 😉
I’ve been on the Fugate forum and I didn’t get much help as the “first” Fugates here in the US can be traced but no one can find anything about my Edward Fugate. It is just like he suddenly appeared from out of no where and they can’t link him with the first Fugates to come here. So I’m going hmmmm
Later! 🙂

more Fugates with a picture.
As far as my Harts, Greydove, it goes back to the Anna Elizabeth Hart b. 1750 in Logan Virginia who married George Edward Sizemore ( some say her name was Aruna) her father was James Hart. He was from VA/NC as well. I have also herad the legend of James’ father being Chief Bear Hart. Never have found any documentation to support that. Like you said the Harts can be ellusive. We are talking 200 years ago, so this is my most recent Hart ancestor.:D
December 8, 2007 at 2:45 pm #29172Thanks for the sites. But as I mentioned I’m aware of this just didn’t “print” out the info.
As it was the mixing of the recissive genes of this Martin Fugate and the Smith family. A recessive gene has to be present on both sides to develope. In a nut shell both the Fugate and Smith’s had to have this recessive gene or it wouldn’t have developed.
Recessive genes can do some really strange things.
Many moons ago when I was a child the man that delivered fuel oil to local families lived in Covington IN was what was called a “blue baby” in my time. He was no realation to me at all.
This is a reciessive gene found in some people just not Fugates.
But thanks for making me aware of this.
