I agree, it would be pretty surprising if Vardy and Griffin were completely European.
I don’t know if any of John Collins and Lydia Toner’s descendents have been tested. I could ask on the Appalachian Heritage listserve. My line is female, and the closest male Collins cousins would be third cousins.
April 30, 2008 at 11:15 am #34358I don’t believe they are completely European nor do I think they were from the Colonial Collins line. I went to the info Sean gave and I do not believe the information is correct. At one time, I believe the thought was that Lewis may be the father of Griffin Sr but I don’t think that has held up.
I lean toward my Collins line being Saponi Indian. I am not so sure about the whole Melungeon thing, but again it is an interesting theory. I just don’t think it should be accepted at this point as the absolute truth. Either way, Saponi or Melungeon – I just want to know who I am and where I came from.
April 30, 2008 at 11:15 am #34362You may be Saponi, but With R1a you’re also European. As I said before many FPC were Native Americans. And with the early European settlements of America many European men took Indian wives and some stayed with the tribe of their wives.
I also said you might want to contact the people on Rootsweb to find out where they obtained their information and if it was legitimate.
April 30, 2008 at 11:15 am #34363I am not saying I am all Saponi or all Melungeon, I understand about R1a being European. Who knows when it all came together, there may never be an answer to that question. If I just look at my Mom and Dad – we have always kidded in our family that I am an American hillbilly and a Slovak hillbilly as both sides came from the mountains.
I have been researching my roots with my sister since 1977 and have compiled masses of information. I am not saying we are experts or have all the answers. Genealogy is a very personal thing for anyone involved – we all have strong instincts or gut feelings about what we have found. Sometimes, we are right and sometimes not – but we have to remove the feelings and look at the evidence.
I did look at the link you sent me Sean. I don’t believe the information is correct in light of more current research. I will contact them at a future date. My husband and I are leaving AZ in a week for a 2 month trip driving to MN, IN, KY, VA, TN, OH. It will be back to MN at some point then to TX and back to AZ. The main purpose is to find out more about the family and meet some of the “cousins” I have corresponded with over the years.
I appreciate everyone’s feedback and I keep paper copies of everything. That’s why I have to stop in MN – go to storage – look through my 10 boxes of info and decide what part of the family goes on the trip with us.
The important thing is, nothing is for certain until it can be proven.
April 30, 2008 at 11:15 am #34366No matter what the y-haplogroup is, it is only a small part of your ancestry. The y-dna only determines the direct male line and we have millions of other ancestors that this doesn’t account for. One could be R1a and the rest Saponi . Native American y-dna is haplogroup Q, I think
I’m E1b1a, but I would never be considered a black person.

Is your John Collins a son of Meredith Collins? These Collins families came through Southwest Virginia which is where my Collins came from.
My guess is Meredith would probably match Vardy and Griffin. I probably descend from a daughter or sister to these Collins which explains why I have 2 close matches to the descendants of Addison Goins born 1816. Or it could be an adoption.
April 30, 2008 at 11:15 am #34368I just ordered Jack Goins’s new book “Melungeons: Footprints from the Past.”

He may shed some light on all this.
April 30, 2008 at 11:15 am #35072I was just looking at this thread again and realized I never answered your question, Sean. Brenda Collins Dillon believed our John Collins was a son of Meredith Collins. My family said he was a son of another John Collins. Don’t know. Earlier I had said I thought John and Lydia were in Hawkins County TN in 1830, but since then I ran across yet another John Collins in Russell County VA with the right number of children who could also be him, which puts him right there in Southwest Virginia. In 1850 they’re definitely in Tazewell County.
There have been no Y-DNA tests of this branch yet as far as I know, but there are possibilities.
What kind of test gave you the matches to descendants of Addison Goins?
April 30, 2008 at 11:15 am #35074Hi my mother was a richardson from the goinstown area Her father was joe henry richardson. Does this name ring a bell debra
April 30, 2008 at 11:15 am #35075Where exactly is/was Goinstown? I looked for it on Google maps and nothing came up.
April 30, 2008 at 11:15 am #35076This is just an area close to stoneville nc that was just referred to as goinstown. probably because so many goins lived in the area. This is where the harris and gibson cemetarys are. It is in rockingham county, The familys that lived here were harris, goins, richardson, kimmons and hickmans. debra

For some reason my password wouldn’t let me login and I couldn’t get in touch with the administrator, so i just set up a new account.
To answer your question I took a y-dna test 2 years ago. 2 o f my matches are descendants of Addison goins b.1816 and Anderson Goins b.1815 NC. My closest matches are descendants of James Collins b.1847 Tn, Edman Collins b.1828, Moses Collins b. 1774 NC and Benjamin Collins b. 1800 NC.
2 other Collins matches I have been unable to contact, so I’m not sure of their lineages. My earliest confirmed paper trail ancestor is John Collins b.1860-1862. he was married to Margaret Enix and they appear on the Scott County,VA census for the years 1900,1910 and 1920. I suspect John’s parents are William H. and Mary C. Collins who are living in Scott County in 1880 and 1900. On the 1880 census they have a son named John who is about the same age as my great-great grandfather John.
April 30, 2008 at 11:15 am #35121to add more input on the Griffin collins line, there is another griffin born 1833 who was married to Nancy Hargus. This Griffin was from Morgan county,Indiana. his parents were Harmon and America Collins. This line goes back to Aaron Collins 1773 NC and his father David Collins 1750 and Thompsey Posting.
