Greetings everyone I am new to the message board and I recently found out that my great grandmothers grandmother was Native American. They are having a family reunion in 2 weeks. Now I have found her and her husband and their kids on census records dating back to 1870. Her name was Sallie Harris and her husbands name was Frank or (“Trak” as a census mispelled it). I have her picture and she definately looks native. They were from (1870 census) Mangum Township Orange County North Carolina. On the next census record (1880) it shows Little River Township Orange County North Carolina. I have their childrens names and a family tree. Also I have some photo copied pictures. What I am trying to find out is what tribe was she from. I know that part of the Carolinas the tribes were Eno, and Ocaneechi. But also I was told that she was born in Mecklenburgh County Virginia around 1845. I also have my ancestors surnames: Harden, Ross, Satterfield, Henderson, Crews, Harris, Cameron, Reynolds, Mayers, Torian, all those last names are from Orange County, Person, Durham North Carolina areas except: Harden,(Ga) Crews(GA) Mayers(Ma) Reynolds(Ga). If if you guys could help we I would be so happy!!
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31941Dreaminghawk can probably fill you in on that area since that was close to where he was raised. We have a book on Bahama that might list some of that information as well. Will see what we can dig up over the weekend…that is if we can get the weeds, butterbeans, peas, okra, and tomatoes in my mama’s garden under control.
When and where is the family reunion?
Aho

August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31944Don’t know that I can be of much help, but wanted to say hi and welcome.
Interesting how your surname list resembles my folks’ neck of the woods (sw VA). One of my relatives was named Hardin Ross.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31946Wow that was quick. Awesome. Well the reunion is Aug 10th and I am going. This will be the first time I meet my family from My great grandmothers side of the family. I happy that my mom is still around so that she can go also. Hey Beeleaf my Ross family has a website and if you want to take a look let me know. Also Mousini78 my Ross ancesors are from Bushy Fork Township in Person County. My great grandad had a farm there in the early to mid 1900s. Don’t know if this helps but I have a picture of Sallie.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31948Is the reunion in North Carolina or in Virginia? What was Sallie’s name before she was married? Mangum Township is in what is Durham county now. Dreaminghawk has Satterfields in his family…you might want to use the search feature to see what you can find on the surnames you have listed. There were quite a few Camerons in the area where we live now…and quite a few at Stagville plantation, in Durham county, near the Mangum township. Here is the link to Stagville, check their genealogy forum for any familiar names.

August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31949Hey Beeleaf my Ross family has a website and if you want to take a look let me know.
Sure, I’ll take a looky.
Far as we know, we were not from there, but it is a line that has some mysteries.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31950Thanks for the website. I have already been there and my great Aunt Annie Ross is on there also. Her great great grandmother is The Indian woman Sallie Harris that I am looking for information on. I just visited Stagville a month ago and picked up the book Piedmont Plantations. At Stagville is where I got my information on my Henderson blood lines. As far as the Satterfields go I would like information on them also Fannie Satterfield in my ggg Grandmother she was on the Cameron Plantation in Bushy Fork she married Virge Cameron Ross. Thanks for all your help I need as much as I can get!!!!
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31951Oh I forgot the Reunion is in Mebane North Carolina.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31958Welcome
Becky and I live on the land that was the Cameron Person co plantation. Some of your Satterfield, Ross and Cameron ancestors may be buried in the huge Cameron slave cemetery directly behind our property. The Satterfield plantation is a couple of miles up the road. Your Satterfield line would have originated there and probably came to Cameron’s Quarter with the overseer’s wife. James Cothran was the overseer. He married the daughter of John Satterfield, my direct line. We would be glad to guide you to these cemeteries and locations.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31961I don’t know much about her, but there is a Sallie Satterfield buried behind my house here in Rockingham county, NC. Her granddaughter and grandson live close by and finding out more about others that are buried there is one of my next UDC projects. Sallie’s husband, William Satterfield, is buried at a local church, Eden UMC, because they had stopped using this cemetery when he died. Sallie died in 1900. Her grave is only marked by a field stone, but her granddaughter told me which one she is. There is also a Rebecca Angel Plummer and Jas. C. Vaughn buried there that are kin to her. And about thirty other graves and I only know one other name. The other one I know is Sallie’s sister and all I can remember right now is that her maiden name is Lemons.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31964My Sallie Satterfield was married to Virge Cameron Ross. Sallie lived in Bushy Fork Township in Person County. Her husband changed his name from Cameron to Ross after emancipation because his father’s last name was Ross when he was purchased by Paul or Duncan Cameron. I just found out that maiden name of my gggg grandmother who we think is Occaneechi. Her name was Sallie Ray before she was Married to Frank Harris. They lived in Mangum Township then Little River in Orange County. Does this ring a bell to anyone?? I used to live in Durham a few years back but these areas are foreign to me. I really to find out about Sallie Ray Harris. I even have a picture. DreamingHawk if you know about:
F
ANNIE (CAMERON) SATTERFIELD 1868, daughter of WILL CAMERON and KIZZY CAMERON. She was
born 10 Nov 1853 in Person Co., NC2, and died 20 Feb 1923 in Person Co., NC.
I would be very happy to know. Maybe shes buried on your property?
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31966I have been through most of the death certificates for Flat River township in that time frame. Will be glad to look at my database and see if they are listed. The names sound familiar, that’s for sure. I know you said you went to Stagville, but, have you checked the database online?
It’s interesting that I tried to get the folks at Stagville interested in doing a demo there with the NA ancestry…but, they needed documentation that there were NA folks there…not just African American. This may be the information that we need to link them together, eh???
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31972Yea I checked the online database, my cousin, great Aunt, and my ggg grandfathers brother Strephan Henderson (and his lineage) are on there. There are some Harris familys on there but I am not sure if they are the desendants of Sallie and Frank. Remeber Mousini78 some census records list Frank Harris Sallies husband as Trak. That would great if Stagville listed Natives that worked there. I know some were there because at the site there were pictures I saw that showed 2 Native women holding Cameron children in their arms. I wish I saw what their names were so I could have matched them up to see if one was Sallie. By the way is the surname: (Ray) Native?
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31974Fannie (indexed as Lannie) Ross is buried at Pine Hill Church in Hurdle Mills according to her death certificate. …. but her name is not on our cemetery survey of that church so she may be a fieldstone. More later.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31977Now I’m confused (a common state for me 😉
Fannie’s parents are listed as Will and Kizzy Cameron and Fannie marries Virge Ross, then where does the Satterfield come in?
