Pine Hill was the home church for your families. All your surnames are here. These are your relatives.

August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31979Not really sure I was told that she was a Satterfield that was sold to Paul Cameron I guess. I heard that Paul never purchased any slaves directly from Africa and that he always got them from neighbouring communities. Thanks for the website my great grandfather Alline Ross is buried there. His wife Angeline or Angelina is who I am really looking to get a lot of info about. Her grandmother was native, her name(grandmother) was Sallie Ray Harris.Ray was her maiden name. I am posting a picture in my next post. I am trying find out what tribe she was from. Have you heard of a place called the “Redlands” there in your neck of the woods? I was told by a elder (90 years old) cousin of mine that there is where Sallie and Angeline are from.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31980Can you give me any further information on Will and Lizzy? Do you have their full names? I have a Lizzy Cameron married to a Joe Cameron. Lizzy is buried behind us. I am not sure where Joe is buried. Lizzy was a midwife in our area, I think…she signed most of the death certificates for the babies buried in that cemetery. The cemetery was listed as Cameron Quarters or Cameron cemetery.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31981I am sorry not really. All I have is a tree that shows Fannie being married to Virge Ross. But I know on my tree it has Virge Ross father as being Daniel Cameron and Kizzy Cameron being his mother. I don’t any info on the wives family. By the way how in the world do I get pics on here?
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31984Fannie would have only been 7 years old when the uncivil war ended. Neither the Satterfields nor the Camerons were known to sell young children away from their families. Perhaps Fannie’s mother, Kizzy, was a Satterfield before she married Will Cameron?
You are right about almost all of the Cameron slaves being Not straight from Africa. Many of the slave families had been with the Cameron, Bennehan, Amis, or Satterfield families for generations. Many were the Va descendents of African men and indian women from the time before it was unlawful to enslave indians (about 1703 in Va)
Before 1700, only African men were brought into VA/NC. Their wives were provided from the Va/NC tribal remnants. After 1700, oftentimes the indian wife was “free” but her husband and children were enslaved. The history books do not tell us how thoroughly mixed the african/east coast indian really was. Nobody seems to want to hear this truth. btw….. proving lineage to a specific tribe will be impossibly futile…. it is enough to know that you are a proud mixed blood…… and there are millions of us.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31988Thank You So Much!
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31989I guess I have more Native heritage than I though seeing that Kizzy and Fannie had Native heritage. My cousin told me that she remembers Fannie and that she was part Indian. I guess I get Native from from both my grandfather paternal and maternal lineage huh? I never knew that. I guess by the location (Person/Orange/Durham) would it be a safe guess maybe to say Ocaneechi-Eno-Sappony maybe?? I agree I know it would be hard to prove but is that a logical guess?
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31995Many of the Cameron slaves were mixed long before they were in Person/Orange/Durham. In broad terms best guess would be piedmont or tidewater Va, therefore saponi (Using the term broadly) and/or powhatan.
More info on Fannie later tonight when I have more time.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31996To give credit where credit is due, Painted Horse has been looking stuff up and sending it to me by email. She has found death certs on several of Fannie and Verge’s children. They consistently list parents as Verge(Of some spelling) Ross and Fannie Satterfield. Only Fannie’s death cert shows her parents as Will and Kizzy Cameron. Perhaps the informant on the death cert listed Verge’s parents instead of Fannie’s unknown Satterfield parents?
Fannie’s death cert shows her birth year as 1857 and her age as 70 which is inconsistent since she died in 1923. 1857 was my basis for saying she was only 7 when the war was ending. The census info that Amy just sent shows Fannie as 72 and Verge as 75 in 1920 census. That would have Fannie being born in 1848 making her about 17 when the war ended. Age is consistant with 1910 census which lists Fannie as 62, married 47 years with 12 children, 10 living. This would indicate that she was married in 1863 at age 15.
Also, in your Piedmont Plantation book, make note that Cameron purchased slaves (appendix B) from John ROSS in 1807, James RAY in 1825, and in Appendix F one of the plantations is called Jim RAY’S….. so your Ray and Ross have connections to Stagville.
This is an interesting tree.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31997would this be the same John Ross who helped to lead the Cherokee peoples west? This John Ross of the OK Cherokees would have been an elder during the Big War between the states.

August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31998Thats pretty cool thank you so much. If you look at the family tree there are 2 Clem Ross. I am the grandson of the 2nd or younger Clem Ross. Clem Ross father Alline or Al or even Alvis as some census records show married Angeline Harris. Now Angeline Harris grandmother was Sallie Ray Harris. Sallie is where the Native ties in. One of my cousins went to the OBSN headquarters in Mebane NC and they were able to pull up Sallie’s records. As far as us getting membership well that’s a sore subject and I will just leave that one alone. No matter what anyone says if it weren’t for Sallie being alive and surviving what she had to endure I woudn’t be here! But none the less I will try to support my OBSN people because I know she would want me too.
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #31999Just curious as what the last poster said is that the same John Ross thats from the Cherokee nation?
August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #32003This post went cold quick. I hope I didn’t anger anyone if so I am sorry but I was just saying that I had a relative try to register with the Nation and she wasn’t welcomed very warmly.

August 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm #32022DHarden,
Being new, you may not know that Becky is my wife. She posted because I might not have even come to Saponitown until tomorrow night and she didn’t want you to worry needlessly. No one is offended. We all accept the fact that as descendents who aren’t active in the given tribe and living in the area of the given tribe, NO recognized tribe or any tribe seeking recognition will accept us as members. Saponitown is where you can find your “tribe”. Hurt feeling will not change realities.
