Gee, I don’t know Bee. I was more focused on the familar surnames I was seeing at the right time period and location to connect to us. In that list are also Clarke and Bragg I have on my Mom’s side. I see a Johnson listed on the page. I read that Rev.Tizwell baptised more black children than anyone his contemporary. There is also a Goldsberry elsewhere in the book that could be the brother of my Susannah.
I don’t yet understand it’s relationship if any to what this book calls our “Fort Christina” (not the Swedish one in Wilmington, DE). I’ll let you know if I come to understand this better.
I’d be interested in seeing the interior of the Dinwiddie church to get a look at that holy table from 1725.

September 17, 2007 at 6:24 pm #28510I found the wording and lack of paragraphs confusing. Going back, starting at the beginning of ARTICLE XL on page 437, it lays them out as seperate churches. I still find it mildly amusing that people fought over a church. As for how the current Dinwiddie Church relates to the original Saponey Church I’m not yet sure. I can’t yet decipher the conflicting dates I’m finding. I’m sorry for the mistake 😮 . Does anyone know any of these things?
Is the holy table in the still standing Dinwiddie Saponey Church a place ancesters at Ft.Christina/various sp. could have worshipped at?

That is really good info. Dinwiddie co. Va genweb has info on this church too. The original date of 1725-27? Near present town of Dewitt, Va. Do you want to make this church info a separate thread? This area must be pretty close to Brunswick co and the town of Crewe was mentioned somewhere. See the Saponi Cabins thread. Were the cabins somewhere close to the Old Saponey church? I’m looking. Saj
September 17, 2007 at 6:24 pm #28531Separate thread sounds like a good idea to me.
Here’s another little booky I just found:
September 17, 2007 at 6:24 pm #28532Here is a map of the present day counties:
September 17, 2007 at 6:24 pm #28533Almost in the ballpark of the right time. The county maps here are a bit hard to read, but there is some cool stuff below there, mapping out where various familiar named families lived (Patterson, Brown, Lewis, Jones, Gay, etc). Might put this link in a different thread, too.

September 17, 2007 at 6:24 pm #28540Yes, Sue and Bee, a new thread sounds great.
Actually, as I posted at the end of the post#14 here, I did enter info on this book in another place, http://www.saponitown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3394 . Perhaps it fits there??? Neither post has gotten too much attention.

I found something interesting. My direct line, Josiah Tanner had a Matthew who had a son Thomas Stilwell Tanner. One of his sons was George C. W. Tanner married to Mariah (Maria) GOLDSBERRY. In Indiana. He was born C1829 and she, 1836. Her parents, Samuel Goldsberry and Elizabeth Smith, if correct. Going back to a Teddy Goldsberry? Haven’t had the chance to dig into. George C. W. Tanner had a brother Samuel who had a daughter Minnehaha. My Tanner line begins in very early VA then onto the Carolinas…border of North and south Carolina..and into Ky where some remain. Josiah dies there. Some children end up in Indiana as does his widow. Saj
September 17, 2007 at 6:24 pm #28608Do you know where in Indiana these Smiths were? I had Smiths there.
September 17, 2007 at 6:24 pm #28618Linda,
Samuel Goldsberry and Elizabeth Smith were married in Marion co Ind. 1825. Samuel is in the 1830 census along with several Smith men. Not sure who Elizabeth’s father is. Marion co was formed 1821. Indianapolis is in Marion. Saj

On the website freeafricanamericans.com/free_indians.htm
I see under Augusta Co. VA a James Tanner bequeathed items by a Mr. Joseph Wright Wills:1778-1787 p. 250 ( 08/20/80?) .
Also picosearch.com had alot of the families we are searching for and I found a reference to an orphan ,Mary Tucker, bequeathed property by her step-father, John Pleasants who married the widow, Jane, of Capt. Samuel Tucker ( of Bristol ). 10/1677. St Savior’s, Norwich, VA.
Also, Allen families , Giles Webb.

September 17, 2007 at 6:24 pm #29101Magnolia,
I keep looking at those links and getting sidetracked from all of the info. Here is an excerpt from a Jones database.
Commonly called Capt. Jones. In 1698, he owned 250a. in Bristol Parish , Charles City Co., on the south side of the Applomattox River, up the w est branch of the Rohowick, near the land of Lt. Abraham Jones, son of P eter Jones. In 1715, he bought 168a. for 200 lbs. from John & Sarah Ev ans. In 1723, he was living in Nottoway Co. In 1724, he lived on 924a . near Stoney Creek in Prince George Co., about 20 miles southwest of p resent day Petersburg,VA.
An Indian trader along with a number of other pioneers of Prince George , he made a fortune trading with the Indians in Southside Virginia and i n the Carolinas. The principle trade was in beaver, which could be obt ained for a few beads, but brought a high price in Europe. This was th e cash crop long before tobacco brought fortune to Virginia.
Except for son Richard Jones, who in his will calls Mrs. Rachel Jones ” his step-mother”, the maternity of Capt. Richard Jones’ children is not e stablished.

September 17, 2007 at 6:24 pm #29102These people are very intertwined. I get all mixed up when I start looking at all of the marriages between everyone.
Something else I found..on that list of descendants of Pocohontas is a Phillip Trapnell Allen married to Jane Randolph Cabell. This is a grandson of William Allen who with brother Drury bought land in NC from William Gowen 1758 Flat River. (William and Drury brothers to my Joseph) And, a brother of Phillip is Grant Allen. He married two Ware girls, sisters, one after the other died. Somehow he is in the database for the Mt. Tabor Indians of Texas. Why I don’t know. There is more if I could ever get organized. Saj
