Bill…… we may be cousins, yet. 😉
I have Sarah Davey married to my John Lunsford in 1821.
Sarah’s parents are William Davey and Margaret Jones married Feb 14, 1783.
I had Margaret’s parents as Ambrose Jones Sr and Catherine Unknown.
***********
According to Person Co Heritage Vol 2, Family 429, page 273. (Isn’t Avonia Jones a perfect beauty?), Catherine is Catherine Collins and Ambrose is son of Robert, son of Richard, son of Thomas Jones…original mid 1600s settler from Wales.
Bill… do you have any info on Catherine Collins line or this early Va line of Jones’s?
July 10, 2005 at 2:25 am #15484Thanks Dreaminghawk,
and “Precognition” 🙂
My JONESes go back to Person Co., NC & Halifax Co., Va (That Jones line goes back into 1750’s Orange Co., Va., who were heavily invested in our Collinses) as do my SHELTON & “GIBSON, a.k.a. WILBURN”/WINBURN ancestors/cousins and a couple of others. I’m working on those lines again after meeting Tutelee at the Gathering 🙂 & discussing Willbourne/ Wilburn, and seeing then, the probable connection to a lot of other surnames we’ve worked on, on this Forum, but hadn’t looked into before.
Peace, Brother.
July 10, 2005 at 2:25 am #15487I been playing on world family tree and found this partial quote without reference to book or page though I assume granville co, NC records. Are you familiar with this document’s meaning?
quote>>> Death: abt 1782 in Caroline Co., VA
Note: “Estate of James Collins: Granville Co, NC 2 Apr 1782: James Collins, died in Caroline Co, VA;
James Jones, Ambrose Jones, Stephen Jones, Reuben Jones, Gabriel Jones, Robert Sandfort, Ann his wife, Benjamin Hawkins, Phebe his wife, Peggy Jones at the Co. of Caswell Co, NC for 100 pounds, deliver to James Winfrey and wife Elizabeth
Why are all the Jones brothers listed? What is delivered?
Catherine seems to be proved as daughter of James that came to granville, but there are multiple James Collins by late 1700s.
July 10, 2005 at 2:25 am #15489Thanks, Yes, I’ve seen that before.
Tying this together? Well, we should think about….
Orange Co., Va was created in 1734 from Spotsylvania Co., Va.
The COLLINSes of Spots. and Orange Co’s were the same family.
Source: Spotsylvania Co., Va Records, Deed Book E, Abstracts (Crozier):
“Jany. 8, 1759. James Collins of North Carolina, eldest son and heir at law of Joseph Collins, late of Spts. Co., Decd., to Thomas Collins, L’s 20, William Collins, John Collins, Ann Collins. May 1, 1759.”
The “Joseph Collins, Dec’d” referred to, is the Capt. Joseph Collins who ransomed Saunee, the Saponi, from the French in the 1750’s. I “think” Saunee was probably a “Collins”. Why else would Capt. Joseph have ransomed him? (a dau m’d a JONES whose kid m’d another Collins in Ky).
Capt. Joseph Collins, “Gent.”, was a son of old Thomas Collins, the Saponi. The “Thomas” Collins listed in the 1750 records above was Capt. Joseph’s son, Thomas.
Capt. Joseph Collins, “English Gentleman”, was heavily connected and intermarried with the families of Elisha Wallen, Zachary Lewis (m’d Elisha Wallen’s daughter Mary “Walker”), et. al., mixed Indians in Spots- and Orange Co’s.
(Yes, Joseph Collins had a brother William, who lived in Orange County, Va., per Joseph’s Will.)
Peace, Brother,
Bill

July 10, 2005 at 2:25 am #15499Bill and Dreaminghawk,

July 10, 2005 at 2:25 am #15509Gabriel Davey marr Elizabeth Bumpass
Where to start……. my Margaret Jones who started this thread was married to William Davey b. 1763 in Orange co, NC. William is s/o Gabriel Davey and Elizabeth Bumpass. Gabriel Davey is s/o Ashburn Davey , s/o original settlers William Davy and Mary Ann Ashbourne.
Elizabeth Bumpass (Bill, see your Bumpass books 😉 was d/o Robert Bumpass b. 1705 Prince George co,VA and Sarah S Bumpass.
Robert is s/o Samuel Bumpass and Mary Gabriel of Plymouth, Ma
Robert has a brother, John, who’s daughter, Anne Bumpas, married Robert’s son, (Fighting) John Bumpass.
Now follow me back down the line….. Fighting John’s son, Deep Creek John, married Nancy Roundtree Day, their daughter, Jane Lewis Bumpass married David Remus Moore (of the William Moore/Susannah Martin line) that brings down the Satterfield line to join the Lunsford line and produce my maternal grandma.
And that is just the beginning.
Bill, when and how do the Bass/Hayes/Daye/Hawley lines tie in here… they are in the area by this time. Is this Daye family gonna tie to my Nancy Day line?
July 10, 2005 at 2:25 am #15511Bill, here is the info we discussed concerning my Lucy Jones brick wall…. I’m bound to believe she is of this same Jones family.
Lucy Jones b. 9-18-1834 d. 3-1-1909 (info from tombstone at Bethany Baptist Church in Person co, NC)
married on 1-3-1860 in Person co, NC to:
John G Newton b. 9-15-1836 d. 3-9-1903 in Person co, NC
July 10, 2005 at 2:25 am #15515Oops…
I didn’t explain that previous connection correctly. Dreaminghawk, your William Davey who married your Margaret Jones is the brother of James who married Elizabeth Winstead. Then it would be their grandaughter..Abigail, daughter of Moses Walker and Elizabeth Davy, (Elizabeth daug of James) Abigail married to Joseph Jones Lawson, son of John Lawson and Elizabeth Allen, daughter of David and Catherine Lanier Allen. So Gabriel Davey and Elizabeth Bumpass parents of both William Davey and James Davey! Sue J
July 10, 2005 at 2:25 am #15521This is another name in part of a cluster of names on a previous post for Person co..Clayton?

Married Johanna Clarke..Three of their girls married Claytons..all lived on Mayo creek..Susannah Coleman and Richard Clayton, Elizabeth Coleman and John Clayton and Sarah Coleman and Thomas Clayton..any connections to these?
