Laurie,
Thanks for posting some of the details of Richard’s books. I very much trust Bill’s judgement on research materials, but wasn’t sure if the books would pertain specifically to my lines. I see that I will have to add these to my budding collection, however, maybe one at a time. Thanks again for the post and to Bill for starting the thread.:)

October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26767Wonder if it would be OK for several folks to buy one of them & do look ups for others?
October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26768Well, I’ll be. This thread led me to put Burnett Saponi into Google, and I ended up finding what appears to be some more info gathered by the Haithcocks, including my family in Patrick County! Ironically, I live with a Haithcock descendant & always expected to find her family in those books, not mine.
I hope it’s all right to share this. I’m pretty excited, and will want to buy whichever book this is in. I don’t see the source(s) of the info listed. Maybe those who’ve seen the books can verify whether the info is well documented?

October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26784Eek! Then I came across this info:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jbowrho&id=I06467
It would seem that someone has the William Collinses mixed up, but now I’m not sure who to believe. My William Collins should be the father of Elisha in PCVA.
October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26786Thanks so much for the posting of the above information.
Cant believe i have two confirmations in one day. John Watkins is in my lineage and will research further but now have 3 comfirmed with documentation in the last week!. When in doubt please post anyway as this helps us all.

October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26805Cool, Janette. This may be another one for you. Patrick County Elisha Collins had a daughter named Sarah “Sally” who married James Watkins in PCVA in Jan of 1828. If you do a search for Elisha Collins will, you’ll see her mentioned.
It gets a little tricky to follow, as there were multiple Elishas. This one stayed put. Some of his children and grandchildren (including a grandson also named Elisha) scattered to other states. He would have been the only one born & in PCVA when Haithcock’s list above was made. He married Hannah Uptegroves, who appears to be related to Elijah (also on the list above). Elijah md. Elisha’s sister Lydia. Another researcher has traced this line extensively. If they are also yours, let me know and I’ll find that info for ya.
I descend from this Elisha’s brother Edward “Ned” Collins, who was living in NC in 1810. The area where they lived seemed to straddle Patrick CO, VA and Stokes Co., NC.
Meanwhile, I went back and took another look at the last link I posted. It just doesn’t make sense. Either they have the lines scrambled, or I need a pill. ;~)
I may have to purchase the book so I can follow the path Haithcock took to come up with that list, esp. since there are several folks from my family on it. There may have been multiple William Collinses, but I haven’t seen too many Marvel Bowlings.
October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26806Hi Bee,
Thanks for the courage to search a non traditional way. It can bring results and i so appreciate everyone on the forum helping each other. Will have to check this one out with care. I have 2 John Watkins JR and Sr. My Watkins is Elizabeth married to John Sr. Hamlin/Hamblen He lived from about 1725 to ? and Elizabeth from 1729? 1738? to 1791.
I will keep an eye out for your people.
Best wishes.

October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26815Hi Bee –
I am excited with you for finding this old post from another site. However, PLEASE be careful what you accept as truth. I don’t want to cast dispersions on anyone but I know that the list you found is not totally accurate. Specifically, ALL of the CORNs that are listed ARE NOT of NDN descent. I know this because my parent’s started researching these people in the mid-1950’s and I have continued that research along with several other descendants. We have even had DNA tests to verify that we are all really related. But the DNA test (specifically the Y-DNA shared by all direct male descendants) shows no Native American ancestry in this part of the CORN family.
So the following names should NOT be on this list:
William Corn
John A. Corn
Samuel Corn
John Corn Jr. (Mayo)
Nancy Corn
George Corn
John P. Corn
Jesse Corn
Now that is 8 out of 23 names (1810 Patrick Co) that I know are wrong. I cannot vouch for any of the others one way or another. But if 1/3rd are known incorrect, can you trust the other names? Certainly not without additional supporting documentation.
Again, please understand that I am not trying to put anyone down nor do I want to discourage sharing information. I just think we all work way too hard trying to get it right for anyone to (intentionally or unintentionally) publish unsupported data.

October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26816John C,
Thanks for calming the waters!
You are right and i will check and double check because i have been disapointed before and dont want to go there again. I have laready started the process. I feel til i make a trip ang find the origional records where possible i will not know for sure…. and as Linda said we may never know for sure. I do have a question about the Corn Surname. I have found one name with Corn and then Mayo off to the side. Do you know of a name change or a Mayo line?? As you may have noticed i have a Mayo line that is hard to follow and thought you may have a clue.
Thanks,
Janette
October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26817Hi Janette –
The only thing I have like that is a John MAYO b. 1785 in Albemarle Co, VA married Judith CORN on 16 Feb 1809 in Richmond, Henrico Co, VA. Judith was b. 1790 in Patrick Co, VA. John died abt 1830 in Leopold, Perry Co, IN. Judith died 29 Mar 1863 in Patoka, Gibson Co, IN. Apparently, they had 8 children. The first 2 were born in Patrick Co, VA in 1809 & 1810. The rest were born in Indiana starting in 1815. It appears the family moved to Patoka, Gibson Co, IN sometime between 1810 & 1815. You might check the following link for more info:
http://friscia.rootsweb.com/genea/friscia-html/d0000/g0001756.html#I106723
If this link has valid data, it also appears that John MAYO came from the line of William MAYO who immigrated from England to Isle of White, VA in the early 1600’s.
I have never been able to identify who this Judith CORN was nor where she came from. Although my branch of CORNs was certainly in Patrick Co, VA at the time she was born.
Just one of the many unanswered questions ……

October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26822Hey John,
Thanks for your post. Your family and mine appear to have been neighbors in PCVA. (Think there were some marriages, too, but I’m still figuring that out.) Nice to meet ya!
It would be interesting to follow the trail taken to come up with the Haithcock’s list above. Since it is titled “Occaneechi_Saponi and others”, I’m not sure how many people listed are “others” and what that means. Perhaps some of these folks were married to NDNs? Any of those stories in your family?
Meanwhile, here is a question you might be able to answer. It is about Samuel Corn. I have seen a marriage record transcription that indicates he married Permelia Burnett and another one that lists the marriage to Prematia Branch. The wives’ names are so similar, I am wondering if they are both correct, or if it may have been two different Samuel Corns. Either way, they are most likely my relatives. ;~)
I also found a Sam Corn who married Susannah Slaughter 07May 1819. Do you know if this Sam is the same as the previously mentioned Samuel?
Yesterday I also came across a batch of PCVA Bolling/Bowling tax lists, transcribed by someone who went to the court house. In 1811, Thomas Bolling was listed as Indian on that list. However, Thomas is not included in the list from the Haithcock book. Perhaps there was a clerical error somewhere along the way?
“We may never know for sure” certainly rings true for me. With several of my lines, I’ve encountered so much conflicting information (some of it published) that I have given up and gone to the next one. Then I stop to ponder how many well documented mistakes there may be…
Somehow, the brain damage this hobby has caused doesn’t stop the madness for long. ;~)

October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26828Has it been mentioned here that Corn is one of the few surnames (half a dozen) that can be traced to a documented tribal Saponi?
This research material is valuable in finding directions to take in your research. This work has been used by others who have successfully negotiated state recognition, but generally, the information needs to be fine tuned and verified. It’s like a map to good veins to mine, but you’ve got to do your own digging.
October 21, 2006 at 2:06 pm #26832Linda –
You are absolutely right. Some Corn’s have been documented as Saponi. Unfortunately, that line is only the descendants of Robert Brooks Corn and then only because he married a Jeffries.
There have been other Corn’s who have some NDN heritage but, again, it is only because a Corn male married a woman with NDN ancestry.
At this point, the best “guess” shows 3 basic Corn lines; 1 line originated in NE Europe (Germany, Poland, Russia), 1 has British origins, and 1 (Robert Brooks Corn) probably has slave origins. There is one branch that sprung up in New York/Penn area that has not been specifically identified but probably comes from the original British line.
