A ceremonial powwow begins at noon and features a grand entry procession of many tribal affiliations, including chiefs, head dancers, elders, and children. Master of Ceremonies Rick Youngblood will direct the activities in the arena and explain the symbolism, protocol, and spiritual meanings of the dances, regalia and drums to the spectators. “Rick Youngblood and the Birdchoppers” will serve as host drums for the festival.

Bringing this forward since it’s just a few weeks off. Looks to be a busy September….as the pow wow season draws to a close.
We are awaiting Tropical Storm Hanna’s arrival before we can make plans to attend Stuart. Hopefully, we will know more by the weekend, but, for now they are saying that it will be coming in Friday with the brunt of it on Friday night and into Saturday. Expecting lots of rain and the possibility of tornadoes.
Well, we missed Saturday because of Hanna, but, we thoroughly enjoyed Wolf Creek pow wow on Sunday. Even though it was hot, the energy there was wonderful. There were quite a few vendors selling herbs, tee shirts, flutes, jewelry, regalia and many other things. The food was supplied by the Wolf Creek tribe. Hot dogs, frybread, roasted corn, and several other items. And they had access to an air conditioned building for restroom facilities.
We had a blast…and didn’t want to leave to come home. Definitely putting this on the list for next year.

Boy I hated missing the Stuart Pow Wow. I had a bad cold and didn’t think the hot damp weather would help the coughing any. And no one wants someone around them that is coughing. I’m going to do my best to be in Martinsville, VA. Looking forward to seeing my friends and family. And wait til you see Timmy in his Ribbon shirt. I had to cut eight inches off, but maybe I can use that for something else. See ya Cindi
Yeah, we missed seeing you guys. Hope you are feeling better now. We are hoping to be at Martinsville…depends on the new mommy and baby. Not sure what day they will be coming home from the hospital. And looks like the weather forecast is rainy for Saturday, too…not good for that location. If I remember correctly, it had rained last year and a lot of folks got stuck in the parking lot. Hopefully, Creator will bless us with some good weather….yeah, always keep your scraps, you never know where it will end up.

Indian Festival location moved

The 24th annual Indian Festival will be held Friday and Saturday at Resurgence Properties, formerly Bassett-Walker, at 405 Walker Road, Martinsville.
Ryan Barber, director of marketing and external affairs for the Virginia Museum of Natural History, sponsor of the festival, said the site was changed due to the wet conditions of the field at the original site at the Martinsville Middle School.
Friday will be student day at the festival, in which area students will learn about Indian heritage and culture.
The festival will be open to the public from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.
This is the last Indian Festival to be held by the museum. Next year, a folklife festival is being planned.
Thanks for the update on the location. I emailed anyone that might not see it on here. I hope they have a sign at the old location so that the general public will know of the change.
If Anyone is heading to Martinsville, VA on 220 north, and you see two short people, one lots shorter than the other, hitchhiking, stop and see if it’s Timmy and I, after that wait in the gas line, I think I may buy a horse and buggy. The grass is high enough in my front yard to feed the horse. I don’t know what to do with the Mushrooms in the back yard. Hopefully we’ll see our friends and family at the Indian Festival in Martinsville, Va. Bring pictures of the newest member. Cindi
The Indian Festival at Martinsville turned out to be a wonderful day, despite the heat and humidity. There were quite a few craft vendors selling pottery, beadwork, clothing, and many Native made items. There was one food vendor, but they had a good variety of things to eat. The drum was awesome…even got pretty intense a few times..which is rare when you are dancing on cement in a building.
We had a fantastic time…thanks to those that participated in my honor dance….my loving husband saw to it that I had a birthday dance with my family. Am also glad to hear that the Festival will continue next year…but, more on a multicultural side, which should be interesting.

Would like to issue this invitation on this thread as well as the Maecyn thread….we are planning to take our new granddaughter, Maecyn, into the circle on Saturday, Sept. 20th, at Town Creek pow wow. We would like for any of our Saponitown family to join us in welcoming her into the family. Hope some of you will be able to make it.

I entered the circle officially for the first time at the Martinsville Indian Festival. I want to thank my Saponi family for all the help they gave me. They made me feel right at home. I want to say special thanks to Becky, Ken, Bee, and Sandy. They helped me know all the right things to do. My husband and I really had fun trying to do the couples dance, at least we tried hard. Cindi…the one thing to remember. Just feel the drum….it will guide your feet. And it was good to see y’all in the two step….that’s how Ken and I got into the circle the first time….on a public dance. Will have to get him some sheetrocker stilts….LOL.
