Ok, thought I would intercept for just a moment here….I started attending pow wows over 5 yrs. ago. It was only after meeting some of the elders and becoming part of a friendship/family circle did I begin to want to dance in the circle. It was after much discussion and teaching from those elders that I began to prepare my regalia, asking about each piece as I added it. I have had close instruction from a lot of dancers/elders. Not to say that I don’t have a lot still to learn, but, I didn’t just put together an outfit overnight and go in the circle at the next pow wow. If I gave that impression, I apologize. And I realize each person has their own time line and can’t be compared to my experience. Just my humble opinion, that’s all……
September 25, 2007 at 6:29 pm #28871I to want to add my little bit on the dancing at POW-POW’S . I have been working on my regalia for going on 5 year’s . This may seem like a long time to work on something ; But I am letting the Spirit of our Ancestors lead me . I still dance to do the fact that I have been invited at almost all POW-POW’S I have ever been to . And at first I did not want to because all I had on was my moccocins and a pair of tan pant’s with embroader stripe down each side and a brown colored shirt . And this was when I first met Paul “Greywolf” Wright . And since then I have been going to every one of the POW-POW’S I can make it to . And through these last few years I have gotten a great deal of help on my regalia and also advise about the different dances . I just hope and pray that i can find some of my kin at some of the POW-POW’S and I can come a way with some unanswers that it seem’s one one will tell me . I appreciate all the help I have gotten from this Fourm . And if I run across anything in my searches I hope every/one know’s I will post it . Regaurdless if it is about the POW-POW’S or what it is .

Hey Becky. I don’t think you gave that impression at all. I may have, but you didn’t. ;~)

You have worked on ideas for your regalia for a while as well. And you have the blessing of elders, too….and their permission. If it had not been alright for you to enter the circle, you would have been told. You have had instruction from dancers and elders….and the ancestors. That’s why I say everyone’s time line is different….I have no idea what past experiences you have, and have no right to question it, it’s what’s in your heart that matters. You know we would not have encouraged you if it had not felt right. Besides, Ken needed lil sister beside him since I couldn’t…..LOL.
September 25, 2007 at 6:29 pm #28890Aww man….. I gotta dance with my sister? >;-)
You would not have been gifted a skirt and handmade shawl by a very wise (often head) lady dancer if she did not want you in the circle.
