howdy Rockhound.
You asked about Riddles on Guion-Miller. Yes there are several. None are from Tennessee, though.
Fannie J, Ida, Fred F, Fnnie M, Dewey L, Lillian R, Grace T, Leona, Louisa E, Giles H, Lula M, Edna L. These were all accepted and most lived in Claremore, Ok (all accept the last 5 names). One was in Ramona and the last four were in Vinita. If you want their Dawes and Guion-Miller roll numbers just tell me which names you need.
The following Riddle’s were rejected — Bettie (Ok), Elizabeth S (Al), Ephrainm T (Ga), James E (Ks), John (NC) GM roll # 19252, Julia (Tx), Mattie B (Ok), Mrs D E (NC), Murray (Ky), Sarah (Ga), Sarrah A (Ok), Wm A (Ga), GM # 40320. These have Guion-Miller numbers (but not Dawes) if you’d like to see them, just let me know which names.

To be honest with you I don’t know. I assume that these are people who would have applied around the turn of the last centrury, right?
I have traced my lineage directly to William Riddle, so I guess I need to see if there was any relative of his on there. I guess I will have to do some more searching.
Thanks for the help.

I have read with interest the information on the RIDDLE family, and am wondering if they may be distantly related to my RIDDELL/RIDDLE family, which was in Orange Co VA from 1700 to 1800. My great grandmother Riddell has mixed Indian ancestry, but I haven’t figured out were it comes in. Family lines that have married into my Riddell line in VA are NEAL, RIDDLE, POWELL, HERNDON, SCOTT, STEPHENS, MOORE, WALLER, KING, PENDLETON, POLLARD, WARE, GLENN, COX, MEADE, THOMPSON, WINN, YELTON, GLENN.
Also, my cousin took a DNA test tracing his RIDDELL surname back, it would be interesting to see if any RIDDLE men out there have also taken this to see if we match.
And how would I get a hold of the Guion-Miler roll records to see if any of my family in east Tennessee had tried to claim Cherokee heritage. Do these rolls only show those who were accepted or the rejected folks as well?
Shad
Shad,
I’d be interested in learning about your cousin’s DNA test. I am not a direct male descendant, but I am can find a cousin who would be.
I’d also be interested in the information you have on your Riddles. Maybe it could shed some light on Moses Riddle.
I recently spoke with a Riddle who claimed his dad had traced the Riddles (Ridley, actually) back to three brothers who came over from Scotland. He claimed that all of the Riddles are descended from these three brothers…I hope to speak with his dad soon. His side came from Henderson, KY.

December 25, 2003 at 3:30 am #19076My cousin Riddell took the test from family tree DNA, his results had his paternal side closely related to folks from Ireland. I compared his results to a Riddle who traced back to Maryland, no close relation. My Riddells (also spelled Riddle, Ridley, Ridle) came from Scotland in 1700 to Orange county Virginia, then went to Kentucky in the 1800’s, were many of them still live. I haven’t found any of your Riddles in Orange county VA or Kentucky, so I suspect if your family is related to mine, it goes way back. It would be interesting to see your cousins test results.
December 25, 2003 at 3:30 am #19087Shad,
I just found a direct male descendant, but I only spoke with his mom. He may not be too interested in all of this at all.
Would you mind sharing your information on your Riddles coming over to Orange County, VA? I’d love to see it.
December 25, 2003 at 3:30 am #19185After looking over what has been written on your Riddle family, I don’t see much that connects mine to yours, but just in case, heres what I have. Their name has been spelled Riddell, Riddle, Ridley, and Ridlon, but my grandma spelled it Riddell.
A James Riddell came from Scotland and settled in Orange county VA about 1700. I only know of one son, William Riddell, born in Orange county Virginia around 1720. He married Joyce, who’s mother was a Riddle. Then I only know of one son of William, another William, born in Orange county around 1760. He married Joycy Neal. They had 13 kids and then eventually went to Kentucky. The source I have is a book put together by my great great grandfather Riddell, which shows all the known descendents of William Riddell and Joycy Neal. My grandma donated the sources she had for this book to Duke University. Hope this helps.
December 25, 2003 at 3:30 am #19190Shad, in an earlier post you mentioned some family surnames that married into your Riddle/Riddell family…….the one I’m interested in is WALLER. Are your Wallers related to Benjamin Waller of Williamsburg/King William/Spotsylvania VA? (descended from John Waller of England)
Waller is my surname. My great-great-grandfather William Robert Waller II was a very bright mulatto ndn mixed slave and I’m trying to find out whether his father was any of the Spotsylvania Wallers.

Thanks for the information. I don’t know if there is a connection there or not, but it doesn’t hurt to look.
My earliest relative that I can guarantee is Moses Riddle from Orange County, NC. I can’t get back any further.

All of these individuals were closely associated with the Riddle family in records going back more than forty years, most recently to Pittsylvania County, Virginia, earlier to Orange County, North Carolina along the Flatt River (present-day Person County, North Carolina), and earlier still to York County, Virginia, to Louisa and Hancock counties in Virginia along the James River, to Amelia County, Virginia, to Essex County, Virginia as early as 1717, and possibly to the Pee Dee River basin in South Carolina in 1729-1730.12
Brenda,
Can you tell me what your sources are for the presence of these people in York County, VA, Louisa and Hancock Counties in VA, Amelia County, VA, Essex County, VA and the Pee Dee River basin in SC? I assume these are places where the Collins family was found, not the Riddles?
Also, in reference to the Cooks mentioned. I recently came across some information about a John Riddle being the first Riddle to come to America (VA specifically). He married a Mary Cook. I don’t know what county they were in, but it was VA.
December 25, 2003 at 3:30 am #19332Brenda doesn’t have computer access right now, she does have a website though, filled with her research, maybe you can readily find the answer to your question there.

Have you checked out Jack Goins research?
“There were several people named Micajer Bunch. The Micager I follow in this research is also listed on several records with the nickname “Cage” He is associated with my seventh generation grandfather William “The Tory” Riddle. I don’t know if this association was from their neighborhood 1750’s in the community of the Flat River, Orange County, NC, or a possible relationship by blood, or marriage. …”

I think he is working in the same area as Brenda Collins Dillon. He has written a book on these folks which, unfortunately, I haven’t gotten yet. His web page has a lot up and he contributes to Melungeon research. If I understand correctly, Jack Goins is pretty convinced that the Melungeons were Indian, probably Saponi.

December 25, 2003 at 3:30 am #20209I got a copy of Jack Goins’ book from him. Thanks.
December 25, 2003 at 3:30 am #20211You are welcome. I need to get a copy for myself. Does he deal with the Moore family or any Goinstown area families in this book?
Brenda
December 25, 2003 at 3:30 am #20212I will have to look. To be honest, I focused on the Riddle information first. With a newborn in the house, I don’t get much time to read or research. 😀
December 25, 2003 at 3:30 am #20214I can’t recall if this has been mentioned before or not, but I found another Riddle on the 1767 Pittsylvania County Tithables…
“The Revd Alexander Gordon’s List, Thom. Riddle, overseer,
Davis Harry”
What does this mean? Are Thomas Riddle and Davis Harry on the Reverend’s list?
