My GGGG Grandfather John Austin b 1726 acknowledged that he was a Saponi before a P&Q Court hearing to seek permission to visit with, and secure peace with the Catawba in 1755.
I have now re-read John’s abstract from the Pleas & Quarter(ly) court, the appearance was in Rowan Co, NC, records were transfered to Surry Co, NC when Surry Co was formed from Rowan – at least I read this in a Surry Co history at the Chattanooga Public Library several years ago.
John was the father of William Austin b 1750+/- his son;Hezekiah b 1787 his son; Jonathan 1823 his son; William Blevins Austin 1855; his son Ned Elric 1902; his son Charles, me.
I hope to make contact with other descendants of John Austin, Sr b 1692-1701 possibly in VA or NC. He married Hannah Love. Hannah was probably the source of Saponi blood in my family. Were the Saponi a matriarchal society?

November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #5966Yes, they were likely matrilineal. Most Woodland Indians were.
I’ve heard from other Austins in the past few years, but their emails are somewhere in the pile right now. It’s time to get that stuff organized, though I’m lacking the time.
You’re very fortunate to have that clear line back. Where has your family been living through these generations? It would probably be useful to others if you could give some of the other names married in with your Austins.
I’d love to see a transcript of that court entry.
Why do you think Hannah was the Saponi? Yes, they were likely matrilineal. Most Woodland Indians were.

November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #6892Heads up, everybody. Make sure you read through all this. This one family spreads out to half the known destinations for mixed-blooded Saponi, and this time the source is documented as Saponi. I think this could prove to be very productive for a lot of people.
Thank you very much for sharing all this, Charles. That’s an awesome amount of work there, and a very rare find. Do you have any sense that your family was part of any kind of community? It will be interesting to look at the neighboring families wherever your family was and see what turns up.
These generations, were they classified as white, fpc, black, mullatto? Or like some families, all of the above?
November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #6893I don’t know what a P & Q court was. Does anybody know?
Where did you find this record?
November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #6895Probably means Pleas and Quarter Sessions court.
November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #6896What does that mean? Pleas and Quarter? People making pleas and asking for quarter (protection)?
November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #6900Linda and others,
“Pleas and Quarterly Court” was a common name for minor county courts during the 17th and 18th century. Perhaps it was not a minor court as Orphans, the recording of legal documents, the handling of illigitimate children, etc were handled by these courts, at least in NC and TN.
In my first post I mistakenly said that John Austin, Jr appeared in the P& Q Court of Surry Co, NC in 1758, the actual year was 1755. In that appearance John stated that he was a Saponi, married to a Susquehanna.
John’s brother Valentine also stated, date unknown, in the same court that he was an Indian. Further, brothers Joseph and Richard(son) were identified as mixed breed in a VA Census in 1770, Joseph in Pittsylvania Co, VA, and possibly that was Richard’s location. That only leaves one brother, Stephen, that was not identified as non-european. Stephen was in the west of VA around the New River Valley in the 1770s, thus was either missed, or was in the company of a number of non Europeans, some of which are usually named on Melungeon lists, Adkins, Gibson/Gipson, Vaughn, etc. My people usually stayed on the fringes of civilization.
I am a proven descendant of John Austin, Jr by means of a DNA test done on a descendant of Isaiah Austin, brother to my William Austin ca 1750, and myself in 2002. In this test we did not show any European blood lines (Paternal, male line of descent) in our direct Austin line. I surmise that we are descendants of the Portugese Sailors that were dropped off on the Outer Banks of NC in the 1500s. UNPROVEN. As I have read, there were Moors, and others out of Africa in Portugal at that time.
At this time I am considering a Native American DNA test, but have not done so at this time.
All AUSTIN descendants are invited to join my DNA Project for the Austin family at large. The only qualification is direct male descent from the Austin surname. Female DNA costs more, thus we don’t have a project underway at this time, though we could if required.
Many people, including the Austin Family Assoc of America have contributed to the research I have, so as I say thank you for the compliment, I must acknowledge the help of numerous others who have helped me compile my AUSTIN file.
I have not yet found the “paper” from Surry Co, but will keep looking. Unfortunately I did not record the actual record from Surry Co, or the month and day of John’s appearance in the Surry P&Q court.
Some of the names that married into the Austin family are:
LOVE, McBEE, QUALLS, DALTON, BLEVINS, ADKINS, COUNTISS, HEARD, TERRY, PREWITT, PINSON, ETC
Thanks for your letters!
November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #6902I’m confused why you’re thinking that there are Portugeuse in that line, seeing as how Portugeuse are European and you’re sure that line is non-European. Am I missing something?
November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #6908Linda,
That the Portugese were of various nationalities is partly an assumption on my part. It is known that the Moors and Shep. Jews were driven from Spain before 1500 into Portugal, that being a minority they were probably not completely welcomed, and had pressure to leave.
Europe was made up from Anglo Saxons (European) and various other people, namely; Moors – in Spain by 711 AD, Shepardic Jews, shortly after the Moors, the Moors were originally from Africa according to my unconfirmed research. and the Jews were from Arabia – Africa?
I am certainly not an expert on this matter, but from reading various entries on the Saponi I understand that we are a mixed race of people, and that the Saponi did intermarry with peoples from the old world.
Since my Ancestor, John Austin, Sr was in this country bef 1720 (?) I am thinking that the Black Slaves were not common at that time, but the Portugese Sailors that were dropped on the Outer Banks may have intermarried with the Saponi.
“I surmise that we are descendants of the Portugese Sailors that were dropped off on the Outer Banks of NC in the 1500s. UNPROVEN. As I have read, there were Moors, and others out of Africa in Portugal at that time. ” as you can see, I stated that I was guessing.
This may be a desire on my part to deny my “Black” ancestry, though my grandmother explained her dark coloring by saying that she was Black Dutch. She was dark complected as were her other Blevins relatives, who were darker than the Austins. Generally, the Austins were fair skinned, some with blond hair.
Your comments are certainly welcome, thanks for your input.
November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #6917Dennis,
Do you feel that William is related to the Austins, if so, how is he related?
I have seen instances wherein children were named for neighbors, not neccessarily relatives.
Where was William born, where did he die, and what were his migration paths? My William Austin 1750-1760 was born in SS VA, or Surry/Rowan Co, NC, later was found in Montgomery, Wythe, Grayson Counties, VA and died in Anderson Co, TN. Does any of this match your William, and/or your family?
I am a Saponi descendant, with possible Cherokee ancestry – unproven. Otherwise, I do not know of anyother Indian lines, though those lines may exist considering ancestry of Adkins, Blevins, and possibly others that were of mixed race.
November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #6994I’ve got almost exactly the same timeline for my family in whats now Halifax, and North Carolina.(1730-abt1790) as far back as i can go on that side. . also leaving for Tennessee at the same time as well to the same counties. Maybe our families knew each other. E-mail me at -cr21-@excite.com and we can exchange info.
