Whether the following is true or not, the origin of these terms is still interesting in several different ways…
From “Annals of Augusta County Virginia” by Jos. Waddell.
pg.27, regarding the 1720s & 1730s:
“At an early day, the people living on the east side of the Blue Ridge received the soubriquet of Tuckahoes, from a small stream of that name, it is said, while the people on the west side were denominated Cohees, from their common use of the term “Quoth he,” or “Quo her”, for “said he”.
pg.406, regarding Augusta farmers who drove their wagon teams to east to sell their produce:
“There was a marked difference between the speech and manners of the people of the two sections. The Tuckahoe carried himself rather pompously, and pronounced many words as his English forefathers did in the days of Queen Elizabeth. The Cohee was plain and even blunt in his manners, and every now and then gave utterance to words which had come down to him from his Scotch-Irish ancestors, and which the Tuckahoe did not understand. Each thought the other spoke a mere jargon.”
November 26, 2004 at 6:52 pm #11791Thanks Bill, that was interesting . . . One person (I am not sure if my family are related or not to these people) sent me an email about a “Ritchey” who in the newspaper article was called a “Virginia Tuckahoe”.

“Said He” that is interesting. I saw this somewhere else just recently, but I’m drawing a blank as to where I saw it. Did any one ever refer to them as the “Said-He”???? It’s just really picking my brain now!:) Ah well. Thank you for the interesting info. Love & Light, Lynella.
November 26, 2004 at 6:52 pm #12500Bill, I located a tribe in southern New York called Tuckahoe that lived near Terrytown, New York. Could be they came from Virginia.
I also found a site by a person called long coat that said his ancestors were pamunkey indians from Virginia that had moved north into West Virginia and were called Tuckahoes there. Didn’t know if anyone had seen this information.
November 26, 2004 at 6:52 pm #12501Bill, your great at finding information so I have been trying to find more information on my ancestor ailcy frazee who married reuben george on dec. 27, 1780 in New Jersey. She was born 1755 in stoney hill, Union county,New Jersey and died july 27,1821 or 1824 in Pendleton county, West Virginia. I have seen her name spelled elsey frazy also. Her husband Reuben was born in Virginia but was raised in New Jersey. He was in the American Revolution and signed up for a pention in Pendleton co. West Virginia. I went there two weeks ago and got a copy of his pention application. He mentioned ailcy in the application which was dated august 1 1820. I descend from their son Henry George sr. who married Mary Elizabeth Murphy about 1830 in Randolph co, Virginia. she was born 1794 in Barbour co. West Virginia. They both died in Roane co. West Virginia. Since ailcy was full blooded Tuckahoe indian from a Souian tribe of Virginia I would think that someone would have written about her but have not found very much info. If you could help me with this I would be very thankful.

this Longcoat was probably me.
Once upon a time I was gullible and believed things people told me. One man told me we were “Pamunkey” and said he had proof of it. Well I kept asking him how he knew and he just stalled. I told this person of the name “Tuckahoe” and he acted like he knew of it and said there was a “lost” Cherokee clan by that name.
Later I went on a crusade against fake tribes and groups — now, like a pendulum I no longer am gullible, but think there may be something to family stories after all, but now I demand documentation for proof and accept “stories” only as “evidence”. I was part of a crusade that found this fellow was a fake with his own fake tribe in fact (wich he made up), but it took a while for me to decide who to believe. But i am pretty sire it ws mine.

ps — please call me by my name of “vance” and not that old moniker of “Longcoat” I used to use. If there is any website up that says what you say, I am ashamed of it and don’t even know where it is myself.
November 26, 2004 at 6:52 pm #12504Vance, Thank you for your reply. I am like you and have found out that you need to investigate things first before believing it as gospel. I have found that some things are true and some things are error. Have a good day.

Vance, you have a lot of integrity and I think that’s wonderful.
I wanted to lay this here and you tell me if I have it right or not so When I come across this stuff I’ll hopefully remember to snag it for you. I think I saw something the other day on your Reuben George, but now I’ll have to back track to find where I saw it. O.k, is this right? Reuben George, b., 1749 in Culper Virginia and he was raised in Jersey? And this, Ailsy Frazee, b. in Stoney Hill in 1755, Union County, NJ? I’m almost thinking I saw something with the last name of Frazy on it just like 2 days ago! Dog gone it, I knew I should have nabbed it.;) I like Bill’s Tuccaho and Cohee piece here too. Did I spell those right? Sorry if I didn’t! I try to edit myself even just thinking! I’m wierd, but:D don’t tell Kerry:D cause’ it runs in the family!:D Love & Light, Lynella.
November 26, 2004 at 6:52 pm #12521wvaram,
Reuben George and Ailcy Frazee/Fracey, et.al., are still on the unsolved list. I’ve taken several “shots” at them and came up with nothing solid.
Bill
November 26, 2004 at 6:52 pm #12524Boy I really botched the spelling of that Tuckahoe didn’t I! It’s just pure laziness on my part.:)
November 26, 2004 at 6:52 pm #12532Waitman,
HeritageQuest has a new feature where you can search Revolutionary War files. It is still new, so it is not complete. Your Reuben George is listed there. I don’t know if this is pension files or land bounty warrents, or what. The one for Reuben is 7 pages long and it mentions Ailcy in it. It may be what you already have, but if you would like a copy of it, just send me your email address and I will download it and send it to you. (They are .pdf files.)
I also don’t know if this would help you, or not, but there are Frazee’s and Harlow’s here in Howard and Tipton Counties in Indiana. They have been in the area (farmers) since the 1870’s – I believe. They go to my cousins church (Baptist).

November 26, 2004 at 6:52 pm #12538Bill, Thanks for trying. If I’m not mistaken I thought I read were you have Roger/rodger ancestors also. Is this right? If so where are your Rodger/rogers from? maybe we are from the same family. and thank you for the info on chesley rogers. I read somewhere that there may have been cherokees fighting with the colonists against the shawnee. Could be wrong. I also read that there was a rogers that was cherokee. Was hoping that my rogers were Native American.
November 26, 2004 at 6:52 pm #12539Waitman,
I sent the file to your email address. Let me know if you have any trouble receiving it. (It was a 1M file.)
