My name is David Webb. My family is of mixed Native American and White descent. We come from the Rocky Mount NC area, going back to the mid-1800’s. Before that we may have come from VA. Many members of my family, including my Dad and my Sister display native features such as facial bone structure and dark skin pigmentation. My dad and sister actually look half Native, I look more like 1/4. They are often mistaken for Latinos because of this. We dance at powwows and participate in other Native events and ceremonies. We have always identified as being native, just with no tribal affiliation.
Names in my family tree are Webb, Collier and Bass. I have been working with a genealogist. And I’ve linked up with some other Webbs who are members of the Waccamaw and Nottoway tribes. They have found that the Webbs were originally Nottoway, and some joined the Tuscaroras while some went south and joined the Waccamaws. I do not know for sure where my family fits here.
Here is some info on my known ancestors:

David J. Webb, 6 years old, male.
Joseph Webb (Kiniard), 1 year old, male.
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19802Hello DWebb,
You connect to my Webb’s. I am not a Webb descendent but I am related to them through my Etheridge line the Varnell’s also. I know the lineage of the Webbs and the Varnell carry alot of names found on this website. I am also from Edgecombe County,NC. How do you know the Webbs were Nottoway? I have family members who’d like to know this. Our Webb’s are out of Nansemond County before coming to North Carolina. My my relations descend through RileyWebb and John Webb. Our Martha Etheridge married John Webb in the late 1800’s. We have family stories from this Etheridge line also stating we are Native American too. Also I am real real glad to see you here on Saponitown welcome.

March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19816Hi David,
Some of your Webbs are related to Linda’s Amerson/Amason AND Etheredges.
According to the NC Vital Records, Christian/Christiana Webb, b.abt. 1834, who m’d Joseph R. Webb, is shown as the dau of David Webb Sr and Elizabeth Evans.
However, David m’d Elizabeth Evans on 26 Feb 1852 so Elizabeth is her step-mother, and Elizabeth is not in their 1850 household.
David Webb m’d Wealthy Felton on 1 Mar 1825 in Edgecombe Co., NC.
Joseph Webb m’d Christian Webb on 12 Feb 1851 in Edgecombe Co., NC.
Joseph and Christania Webb are listed on both the 1860 Wilson AND the 1860 Edgecombe Co census (Turpentine is seasonal) and they are still in 1870 Edgecombe Co.
more later,
Bill
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19817They are related to my Amason too? Now I didn’t know that. How are they related?
Linda
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19823Here’s how I see a part of that:
John Webb Sr. and wife Parthenia’s son,
William Webb Sr. His son:
William Webb Jr m’d Sarah Amerson 3 Jan 1840 Edgecombe Co., NC; Bondsman: David Webb. (William, b. abt. 1800, was a brother of David, father of Christiana, who m’d Joseph R. Webb)
If one concentrates only on a particular direct line, like most researchers do, we’ll miss the interrelatedness.
There are Varnal’s also marrying in and out of John Webb Sr’s descendants’s lines.

March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19828Bill,
My sister did the Amason line and never once mentioned any Webb’s I guess she didn’t look around at the other Amason. Thank you for that info. Today at work I learned one of the women I work with is married to one of my Etheridge cousins. Looks like her husband and I are about 5th cousins…small world. His grandmother was an Etheridge. I asked her what he looked like she well black hair, dark eyes, dark skin. Sounds like all the Etheridges I’ve met. Sounds like my g greatmother too. She was kind of shocked that i connect to his family. We can thank my white sheet white daddy for that lol He might have been white sheet white but he was still the greatest man I’ve ever known. He had these jokes when I was a kid about all of us going on the warpath. Making comments about living in a house full of indians. But he was great!! and the best friend I have ever had.
Wonder what hapened to David?

March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19836John and Linda! Hey its great to read your replies. Linda, its great to hear from a cousin who is interested in this! I don’t think anybody in my distant family has made this effort. Sorry I only access the internet at work (I live in the boonies), and worked from home yesterday. (I work at the University of FL at the Museum of Natural Hist.)
I found a distant cousin who is Waccamaw . Through their Webb research they said that they have connected the Webbs to the Nottoway, Nansemond, and possibly Tusc. However, I haven’t yet been able to substantiate this. I don’t think that we have any solid evidence yet.
Through my family oral history we say that we are Cherokee (which I doubt) and I’ve heard Tusc. My great Uncle said that we are Blackfoot (I never paid attention to this because Blackfoot aren’t from that area).
I would love to know more. Has anybody been able to substantially connect one of our ancestors to a particular tribe? This is the burning question that my family wants to know. Exactly who are we? LOL.
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19837I was talking to John at work…. I meant BILL AND LINDA! LOL (its too early).
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19839David,
The Saponi have been called Blackfoot by families through history so there is your answer to the Blackfoot riddle. I am sure you have some Saponi in you positive in fact. Whether you will ever find real proof of that lineage is doubtful but I feel sure you are at least part Saponi. I know my Webb family members are. Read through this site there’s alot of good info here that might help you out. I am Nottoway by the way but it’s in a line that does not directly connect with the Webb’s. On my mothers side nearly ALL of my family lines go back to the area of the Nottoway. My Mother is a Rogers out of Pinetops. My father was a Davenport out of Pitt County. Our Amasom family is from the Saratoga area I’ve heard some stories about them if you are interested. As far as I know they are white but who knows in the area we grew up I’m beginning to think all of the early families in the area are of some indian descent. My family lines are some of the first there and the Webb’s were pretty early too. At one point I think one of another of our lines owned the whole stinking county lol It’s good to see you here at Saponitown glad you made it this way….Later
Linda
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19840That would make sense. Do you know how the Saponis/ Blackfoot connection was established? Did people just call them that for some reason? Is this documented anywhere?
The Blackfoot claim has come up several times and was frustrating to me because I knew there could be no possible connection…. LOL.
How do your Webb family members know they are Saponi?
I have a lot of family in Saratoga, Wilson and Rocky Mount. Do you know any I would like to research the Collier line in my family. My family looks so native there has to be a recent infusion of native genes. Glovers?
Here is more of my pedigree…

March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19845David,
To answer your question about my Webb’s they also have the Blackfoot ID in their family. This is how I am sure they are Saponi and they are sure of it too. Now my Webb line also knows there is an unknown native element that entered their lines to when they married into my Etheridges. We have all been told that we had a great grandmother who was a full blood indian. Now she was born in the early 1800’s and to my knowledge there were not any full blood Saponi left this late. Her roots are very elusive and after much much study we are still unable to determine who she was. Most of us do not believe she was from our local area. In most cases in this particular line I have been able to determine who married who by either deed records, wills or an actual marriage bonds. But this lady none of that is possible. David I would not be surprised if your line of Webb’s married into this family either……I’m gonna check that out. Edgecombe County and Wilson County seem to have been a haven of some sort for mixed bloods and both of our roots (yours and mine) are strong strong in this area.
I don’t know any Colliers but the Bass lived real near our folks in Saratoga. In fact my Rogers line lived in Saratoga and Stantonburg area just like your family. Our Amason were there too. My Ruffin line was also there. My Moore’s and Etheridges were up closer to Halifax County early on but later my lines ended up in Joyner & Gardners on the Wilson County line. My gggrandfather John Moore is buried to the left off hwy 42 right before if crosses hwy 301 entering Wilson. Hwy 42 is the road that connects Pinetops and Wilson.
We are real close with parts of our Webb line. Strong family connection there. We did not learn until recently that we are indeed related genetically before that we would say we are just like family that’s how close we are. At any rate it was great to learn we are indeed related…..it was cause for alot of laughter and happiness between us. One of my Webb cousins use to tell everyone at school he had slept with my sister (he got in sooo much trouble for that) What actually happened is they slept next to each other in the playpen as babies. My sister was so mad at him and neither of our parents thought it was funny either! Esp. our fathers….my father said how could you ruin my daughters reputation that way and his father was saying why would you do that to the daughter of my best friend? What a mess that was! I’ll write more later….I need to do some research tosee if I can help you out any.

March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19849David,
Here’s your missing 1870 census data:
1870 Edgecombe Co., NC Census; Otter Creek Twp; 22 June; P.O: Sparta, NC; p. 9:
70, 70:
WEBB, Joseph, 42, m, – , farmer, $150, NC
………, Christiana; 35, f, – , NC.
………, David J; 15, m, – , NC.
………, KINYARD; 12, m, – , NC.
………, William Ann; 8, f, – , NC
(there are 3 different “William Ann” of different surnames, listed by this census taker as females. I don’t know what he was trying to spell but he seems to mean something other than “William” – maybe “Wilma” or “Willie” ? )
The 1850 census info you don’t have:
1850 Edgecombe Co., NC Census; p.123A; undated
492, 492:
Hyrum FORBS, 42, m, – , laborer, $1000, NC
Milly………….., 36, f, – , NC
Rachel WEBB, 18, f, – , NC
Sally FORBS, 13, f, – , NC
M……………., 9, f, – , NC
Rufus………., 8, m, – , NC
Randolph…., 7, m, – , NC
Overten……., 1, m?f?, – , NC
JOS. WEBB, 22, m, – , Laborer, $0, NC (this is indexed as “Jas” but it clearly is “Jos. ” )
(Overten’s sex is heavily overmarked, making it impossible to determine which it is, but ‘Overton’ is a surname, leading me to think this is a male.)
Joseph Webb’s brother Bennett m’d Elizabeth Forbes 12 Nov 1849 in Edgecombe Co., so Hyrum Forbs is likely related to Joseph’s sister-in-law, Elizabeth.
…………………
Christiana Webb, b.abt. 1834, (1850 Edgecombe Census) is the dau of
David Webb Sr, b.1800/02 NC, d.1870s Edgecombe Co., NC who married 1 Mar 1825 in Edgecombe Co., NC,
Wealthy FELTON, b. ? , d. 1848/9 Edgecombe NC.
David m’d 2nd, Elizabeth Evans on 26 Aug 1850.
David Webb Sr appears to be the son of John Webb Sr, b. 1762 Northampton Co., NC; d. 7 Oct 1841 Edgecombe Co; m’d 10 Oct 1785 Gates Co., NC, Teresa Duke, dau of ? John Duke.
(the term ‘appears’ indicates I did not confirm the info that other researchers posted)
John Webb Sr’s son John Webb Jr, b.1789 NC, d. 1869 Edgecombe Co who m’d Nancy Taylor (dau of ? Samuel), appear to be the parents of Joseph R. Webb, b. 1828/9 Edgecombe Co., who m’d Christiana Webb.
Vernon’s father Joseph, d. 23 Nov 1927 in Wilson Co., NC.
Vernon Webb, b. 30 Dec 1902 Wilson Co., NC, d. 30 Jul 1987 Wilson Co. (both from NC Vital Records)
Vernon Webb’s wife Addie/Addy Webb, b. abt. 1868, is the dau of Bennett Webb, b.abt. 1822 Edgecombe (1870 & 1880 Census), and Elizabeth Forbes, b.abt. 1832 Edgecombe; m’d 12 Nov 1849 Edgecombe (NC Vital Records) .
…………………..
I’ll need more info on Eva Bell Carter Webb. In 1930, Vernon and Eva were living in Wake Co., NC. Do you know where she was born?
Bill
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19850David,
I knew a Vernon Webb when I was a child he was the age of my grandparents. I bet that was your great grandfather. My grandmother was born in 1902 and my grandfather in 1907. David do you know when you g grandfather died if I’m not mistaken I think it was in the late 70’s early 80’s. Don’t think I ever met Bobby Webb though. Was Bobby born in the 1920’s? If so he is the age of my oldest aunts.
