More yet:
Linda, I think this is a big find….

In 1701, there was a large Webb settlement on the Tar River in Bertie (later Edgecombe). Names of mention include. John Webb Sr, Richard Webb, William Webb and a woman. There is also a Col Webb (probably local militia). This is more likely your Webb’s and possibly where my come from.
Your Webbs are no doubt tied to these early Edgecombe/Wilson (Bertie co). Mine are believe to come out of Southampton Co (according to Paul Hengg, who mentions my Webbs). Somewhere in the mist of these early Bertie-Southampton Webbs are Indians mixing with these pre-colonial Webbs. One is your group the other is mine.”>>>
Bill, are the Webbs mentioned here ones that we can track?
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20422I thought I would attach a photo of my dad Dennis Webb and my sister. They display the native features common to the Webbs.
I’m thankful that Derrick and Linda are still working so hard to find connections for our Webbs. I know there is much more to find!
Anyone reccognize these surnames?:
Webb
Beaty
Forbes
Duke
Felton
Collier
Taylor
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20423I would love to see the pictures, where can I find them?
Also, the Webbs I know [Mary Webb and J.T. (John Traveler, her son] are Webbs by marriage and I never knew the father/husband so unfortunately I have no more info to offer…I do deeply apologize.
Have a great day,
Tess

Tell Derrick to look up the Nottoway Indians and look at the article that was in the Hampton Roads newspaper a few years back it will show a picture of the reservation boundaries.
David I have contact with the Nottaway and the Tuscarora. I have spoken with the Nottaway extensively and I am one of them this is not doubted due to my lineage. Yes the some of the Nansemond joined the Nottoway in the 1700’s because their tribe split apart. It has been discussed as to whether the Celia Rogers who is claimed to be the last of the Nansemond on the Nottoway Reservation was a relative of mine she died in 1806. Of course she wasn’t the last Nansemond but that is what the Nansemond Tribe of today claims. Just as they tried to claim that a man named Lamb was the last of the Nottoway and he died 4 decades ago. Well we know that wasn’t true:) Just some folks trying to kill us off bit by bit :p As for the Tuscarora there are many of us still hanging around NC. ALot are mixed with the Saponi now. There was and still is so much mixing that it’s hard to say what all we have in us. Probably why I was told I was Indian and White. You where told the same I am sure since you are a Webb 🙂 . Now I do know some Arkansas Cherokee entered Edgecombe County around the 1920’s so that’s in Edgecombe now as well. They married into the Webb’s too!!! But not your line my other cousins line LOL There surname was Watkins and they stated clearly they were Arkansas Cherokee. Clarice Watkins married Samuel Webb…this is the Webb line that connects with my Etheridges who some of them came out of Indiantown in Camden Cty, NC home of the Yawpin. They had and have dark features too.

March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20430Linda,
I’m glad to her from you. Did you get my e mail yesterday in response to yours about the Tusc? I know what you mean about “killing us off bit by bit.”
My grandma (my dad’s mom) left this morning for Saratoga/ Wilson. She is going to get some info on the Glover side of our family. They have also lived in the area for a long time and her father was “Indian” so I’m curious to see what connections we find. (That may be why me dad is even darked than most Webbs because he gets it from her side to). I’m sure they link with you and the Webbs elsewhere because they’ve been there for a while. I’ll start a new post on them. Hopefully we will find something!
I know some AK Cherokee. My best friend is one. His mom is AK Cherokee and his dad is adopted off the OK reservation (Telequa). Many Cherokee stopped in AK along the removal/ Trail of Tears.
Be sure to check out the Glover family thread. I’ll start it shortly….:D 😀
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20503I have not been to the forum for a long time and just happened to check things today and saw the discussion on the name Webb.
I am related to Mary Webb, born Jan. 26, 1726 or 1727 in Pa.
Her father was John Webb Jr. All I have on him is that he died on Oct. 18, 1774. His father was John Webb Sr. I have no other information on him. Mary Webb’s mother was Mary Boone, the aunt of Daniel Boone. Mary Webb married Nathan Lewis (b. 1724, d. 1802). One of the posts mentioned the Lewis name as being part of this. I am just wondering if there is any connection.
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20517Hey! Have you had time to read the whole thread? There is a lot of good stuff here on the Webbs thanks to Bill and Linda. John Webb Sr. is the first Webb we found in our lines. It looks like he was either first or second generation in the Americas. Here is what Derrick, our (Webb) Waccamaw cousin wrote:
<<"The first recorded Webbs to come into the new world landed in Southampton Co (Isles of Wright) in 1624. Two single men, part of the Virginia colony.
There, they met the Nottoway and Mehrrian Indians whom are described as “dark like africans” by these early settlers. At that time SH county was home of the Nottoway, Nansemond and Mehrrian Indians.
Settlements were set on the Nottoway river at a place called Backwater swamp. The rest is history. The northern part of NC (Bertie, Bath etc) would then become settled by these early va settlers.
Linda, the names of places you mentioned in your last Email, I had to pull out an old map. ha ha ha. They lie between the Tar (Roanoke ) and Neuse rivers. Your ancestors would have been part of the Tuscarora and Nottoway who were present there (pushed off their native lands). The Indian woods reservation was on the Roanoke. I am still looking for the Southhampton Resvation in VA.
The Waccamaw, (known as Waccon in VA) were located between the Neuse and Roanoke according to this old Tuscarora map by the Southern Band of Tuscarora. Because of proximity this may indicate some kind of relationship (trading) between the Iroquois (Tus) and Siouan (Woccon) and may explain the similar surnames in both tribes.” >>
It appears that the Webbs began to mix with native/ take Native wives early on– from other findings as well as this. There are also early claims on the Tar River (in the same area our Webbs live today, near Rocky Mount) in 1701 w/ Col Webb. Then again in 1730’s with Richard Webb. Webbs appear in Southampton CO in 1624– we are connecting this to the reservation there.
I’m not sure about Nathan Lewis.
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20519Yes, I have read the posts twice. From what I understand from them is, if John Webb’s mother was indian, then I am related, if not then my connection to the Webb’s has no indian blood in them.
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20525Do you have records indicating that your Webbs were mixing at this time?
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20528No, I do not. I do not know who the wife of John Webb Sr. was.
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20800Woodsrunner,
What are the family stories within your family? Listen to them they will not lead you astray I asure you. Nearly everything my family told me has been proven to be true. The only odd thing is my grandmother said something about Sioux in the 1960’s and to this day I have not seen that to be the case. But there could very well be something I am overlooking in her lines. Your family is the best resource you have talk to them, listen to them.
Linda
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20802David,
I can say now without doubt that I am Tuscarora and Nottoway.
Do you have Barnes or Woodards in your lines yet? Wynns? Sessoms? You need to get busy kid LOL What did your grandma find out on her trip?
Linda
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20803We have seen instances of families with indications to being Saponi/tutelo, who had the story of being Sioux. I was skeptical at first, not thinking that word was on the east coast early enough to have been used in this way, but it was.
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20807Well then Linda I shall continue to look. It’s probably our elusive Rebecca. 🙂
March 16, 2006 at 7:06 pm #20841quest for facts,
There are no stories about this in the family. I have the family genealogy and never thought there might be a connection until I saw this thread. That’s why I asked the question, thinking someone on here might have some info about John Webb Sr.’s wife. Thanks for the reply.
