Will publish more info on this as it is published. We danced this one last year and had a good time at the fort. Dancers-keep in mind it is in November and the fort is right on the water. I almost froze my bloomers off last year, even had on long johns. There are craft vendors and food vendors available. We could not find anyone selling any hot drinks, however, so I will be carrying a large thermos of coffee and hot chocolate. There is a bit of a walk from the parking area to the dance circle, so plan on that, too. This is a good time to sightsee in Virginia Beach as the summer crowd is gone. There are a few restaurants open all year.

January 8, 2010 at 3:28 pm #34842Cheroenhaka Nottoway Powwow and Green Corn Festival
Our Annual Powwow and Gathering, “Ke-to-ok-neh” (a celebration of the Green Corn Harvest) is always on the fourth weekend of July at the Southampton County Fairgrounds, in Courtland, Virginia. The Powwow is unique to our traditions and culture in that it is our time to dance and praise the Creator. Here we renew old friendships and create new ones. Come, join us and enjoy the Drum, Songs, the Dance and, of course, our Native American Cuisine.
I threw this in here so some of you could plan ahead. I have no dates yet, but, assuming it is on the same weekend, that would be July 24 & 25, 2010. As I get information, I will post it here. This pow wow usually closes at suppertime. There are many hotels in Franklin, VA and a few in Courtland.

January 8, 2010 at 3:28 pm #34876We danced at this powwow this weekend….it was hosted by the NASA (Native American Student Alliance) at Duke University. They really went all out for the dancers and other participants. I will definitely put it on my list for next year….we were fed two meals, day pay, T-shirt, and actual bathrooms/dressing rooms/hospitality room, very gracious hosts. The weather was beautiful…and the dancing was great!!
January 8, 2010 at 3:28 pm #34880Wow, sorry I had to miss the Duke Pow wow. We were doing luminaries Friday night and turned out to take Saturday also. And we don’t want to talk about clean up on Sunday. If it’s Easter weekend next year I’ll have to make some kind of arrangements so we can go. thanks for letting me know. Cindi
January 8, 2010 at 3:28 pm #34917We danced at Spartanburg, SC with Ms.Mabel and had a really good time. It is my understanding that it will not be held there again next year, but, I am hoping to keep up with where it goes so we can attend. Ms. Mabel treats her dancers to good eats and usually has camping on the grounds. This was a small powwow but had good feeling to it. Burke Lemons and Brenda Bowlin were the head dancers. Had a couple of food vendors and about 10 craft vendors with lots of different things ( I almost bought a shawl that had red, white, and blue).
January 8, 2010 at 3:28 pm #34932Will be at Monacan next week,Sat 15th.

January 8, 2010 at 3:28 pm #34935It was good to see friends from Saponitown at the powwow on Saturday. My granddaughter, Maecyn, thoroughly enjoyed herself dancing even though she’s only 20 months. There were quite a few vendors selling a bit of everything. We really enjoyed the flute music and hearing about the birds of prey. And time spent with family and friends can’t be measured….
