This is really awsome the links we’re making here. It is very exciting.
November 23, 2005 at 3:31 pm #17773Thanks Ken!
Collins, I know I’m excited too about this!
You asked me about my last name…it’s my married name..the family originated in Holland. Sue
November 23, 2005 at 3:31 pm #17774Paul Cameron marries Anne Ruffin 20 Dec 1832
Their daughter, Anne Ruffin Cameron marries George P Collins 20 Dec 1860 (yep, on her parents anniversary)
Paul and Anne’s son, Duncan III, marries Mary B Short 13 Dec 1877
Earlier surnames related to the Camerons are Mordecai, Walker, Coles, Jones, Amis, Dudley, Anderson, Peebles, Shepard, Mayo, Nash, Owen, Symes, Wilkins, Gales, Read, Hawks, Scott and of course, Bennehan. Many of these unions were in Va before 1800.
November 23, 2005 at 3:31 pm #17808“The Thornton marriage was in 1747 and the Johnson marriage was about 1755.” —- Forrest King
I got this confirmation from Forrest King in the marriages of Sarah Eaton. Forrest has offered to send me the GEDCOM file. I can’t wait to see what else is on there.
November 23, 2005 at 3:31 pm #17809Ken,
I have Scott, Jones, and possibly Walker family lines. I would love to see any Scott information you may have.
I also wanted to thank you for the work your doing on the excavations and preservations.
These are some very intense family connections. I wonder if these family groups moved around together like a mobile community?
November 23, 2005 at 3:31 pm #17817Collins,
Search this forum for extensive research on the Jones lines that came from Va through old Orange/Granville/Bute/Person co, NC to points west and south.
Not only did these extended family groupings move together to multiple locations but unbelievably, so did the “names” of those who stayed behind. I discovered this when I was on a Satterfield board and a descendent of James and Sarah of Tenn claimed my James and Sarah’s parents. I know where my James and Sarah lived and where they are buried…… but here’s the kicker…. his James and Sarah migrated to Tenn with my James and Sarah’s brothers and sisters and neighbors. ….. and I have to assume, with the blessing of my James and Sarah. My conclusion is that someone needed white names to “grandfather in” with the Tenn group. I have seen this multiple lineage occur in many instances since then.
November 23, 2005 at 3:31 pm #18018This is my Grandad’s side of the family with a mystery Johnson connection. For years in my research there have been gaps in information that either misled my attempts to find them or that led no where and with little to no results ( this explaination for my lack of coherency in some family info. would include other family lines as well). My Grandad’s father for instance was reported to me by family to be named John Marion Millican and John Francis Millican. The confusion in passing this inforamtion down had to do with the lineage names. John Francis Millican is my Grandad’s father. John’s father was Walter Lee Millican and his father was Francis Marion Millican. As you will read below misreading census records or other documents can happen with no real fault or blam sense it is just something that sometimes happens. Another reason for some confusion is that as older members of the family passed away so did some of the basic memories of our ancestors and their kin. My great grandfather John Francis Millican died some time after his last child was born and so the family knew very little about his side. It is apparent to me however that more than a passing relationship was established with John’s side since among the pictures aquired after my grandmother Nannie’s passing show the Johnson family from Emma Johnson’s side. Emma would be my great great grandmother. I believe that had I started my family history search at an even younger age than 15 that I may possibly have been given better clues and more of them.
I am so very greatful to people like Dorothy Wren, Geneva Infield, Donna Tower, John and Karen Trullinger, Marvin Oaks, Lyman Reynolds, Hilda Barnette, Ola Johnson, Percy Keel, Harold Whitaker, Brenda Collins Dillion, Bill Childs, Sue Janz and Paula Sain, and others for helping me find some of these lines since my skill in this effort has been nominal at best. Thank you all for honoring our ancestors and in helping to keep their memory.

Unfortunately no Emma Johnson found in 1880 record with father from TN and mother of AL which also could be wrong. You see that the record has been misread…I used just Walter, appx yr of birth and selected same area of Dallas that Francis was in.

The 1880 census is on the LDS website. I did find one Emma Johnson, born exactly 1877 TN, with parents from TN; Coffee county, daughter of John and Mary C Johnson. You will need to find a death certificate for her to see what clues it may give.
Only Martha Ferguson in 1850 record…does not prove it is her.

I did not find a match for the 1860 record and according to the 1900 record Francis and Martha married appx 1870. I also did not find Francis M Millican in the 1850 record nor 1860 record.

I am afraid that the records have not been read carefully or names not spelled correctly. I would think Grace and Sidney had other children between 1934 and 1948 if this is same Grace Millican.

November 23, 2005 at 3:31 pm #18062Hi collins,
Do you know where your Millican’s were at before Texas and Tennessee?
My great-grandma was Clara Milligan. She was born 1893 in Indiana, but her family has been traced back to Randolph and Rowan Counties in North Carolina and before that they were in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. From what one cousin has sent me, they were from Ireland and were Quakers. Up until the 1860 census, their name was spelled as Millikan, Milliken, etc.

November 23, 2005 at 3:31 pm #18064I am unsure at present where they originated prior to Texas and Tennessee. I am not even sure where in Tennessee they resided before moving to Texas. I only recently found their lines. I have seen Millican spelled Milligan, Millison, Milliken, and a couple of other ways too. I think that they originate in S.C. based on some of the research I have seen on some Texas Millicans. There were some Millicans that settled in Texas under Stephen F. Austin’s party. I am uncertain as to a link between my Millicans and the early settler Millicans in Austin’s party. They came from South Carolina. Here is a link to an article on them.

There is an article about Charles Millican at the Grapevine, TX Historical Society website. Charles owned the historic blacksmith shop in Grapevine, TX. Here is a link:

November 23, 2005 at 3:31 pm #18065Hi collins,
You might try around Jefferson County, Tennessee…
I have this article that I received from a cousin from the book “Jefferson Co., TN Family & History 1792-1996”:
The great majority of Milligans/Millikans in Jefferson and the surrounding counties descend from William Millikan Sr., a zealous Quaker who was born in Northern Ireland about 1720. Ireland was being ravaged by a great famine in 1740. The year before, in 1739, William Millikan appears in Chester County, Pennsylvania. By 1741, he had married Hannah Rowan and started a family. In 1758 they migrated south to Rowan County, North Carolina.
Hannah had died sometime after 1768. In 1772, William Millikan was residing in Guilford County with his new wife, Jane White. The children of William Millikan by his first wife were: Samuel, William Jr, who moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee, Alexander, Benjamin, Sarah, Mary and Hannah. Being a Quaker, William Millikan was a non-combatant during the American Revolution, but his sympathies were pro-patriot which placed him on a death list. In 1782, William Millikan was living on Back Creek in Randolph County, near the Guilford county line. On March 10, a band of Tories came to his farm.
Finding William absent, they burned his house to the ground. Still, William Millikan was never caught. He served Randolph County, North Carolina as a Justice, Register of Deeds, and Clerk of Courts during the Revolution. William Millikan died in 1804. In the 1920’s, Mrs. J. S. Welborn, a D.A.R. Regent, found William Millikan’s grave and original tombstone at Centre Quaker Cemetery south of Greensboro. She reported that his tombstone disappeared several years later.
The William Millikan above would be my 6th great-grandfather. Benjamin Millikan above is my 5th great-grandfather.

November 23, 2005 at 3:31 pm #19388I spoke with my Great Uncle Rex Riley about Sara Adora Gross that was married to James Carmical Webb.
He tells me that aparently there is some contention as to the spelling of her last name. It is spelled Goss. Seems that yet again we have another family that can not get their name spelled right.
I have found in the past a Gross family living next to the Webbs in Troop County Georgia either 1860 or 1870. I can not remember the exact census.
Any way I have assumed that Sara Adora came from that house hold as they list a Sara or a Sally. I always did find it odd that she was supposed to born on Aug.4,1854 Bosque or McLennan County, TX but was in Georgia. It never made since to me.
So now I get to try and again on her to see where she may be found. To complicate matters I have Goss relatives on my Collins side as well. Those Goss families came from Montague County, TX around Nocona, TX.
This seems just endlessly rediculous. I keep bumping into the same surnames in every family line I go into. It’s like no matter how far a field these families go they seem to keep hooking back up some where else or “coincidentally” living around one another.
November 23, 2005 at 3:31 pm #19461O.K. I have recieved another e-mail from my Great Uncle telling me that it is Gross. So basically I have an ancestor with no known agreed upon last name.
When I was doing research on her back several years ago I remember pulling a census for, I think, 1860 Troop County, GA.
Now I found my Webbs there. Austin Webb and Nancy Simonton were there and I think the Gross/Groce family lived either next door or in the neighborhood. I think I remember seeing a Sara or Sally listed as a child at that time.
I have that Sara “Sally” Adora Gross was born Aug 4, 1854 Bosque or McLennan County, TX. When I was checking census records back then I don’t think I found a Gross family in those counties during her birth time. I did find a Gross/Groce family in GA at the time. I have James Carmical Webb and Sara Adora Gross married in 1874, but location unknown. Could be Alabama or Mississippi on there way to Texas.
Can anybody help?
Thanks
