Your book is awesome. I need to read it again. There’s so much info there, too much to absorb in one reading. Thanks so much for the hard work. “Bad money”, nah, you’re “good people” I’d say. One question, have you ever heard the name Bowman associated with the Melungeon community? I saw on a website recently, can’t remember whose, where they listed the name as possibly Melungeon.
rockhound,
Also, if you don’t have “Melungeons and Other Pioneer Families” by Jack Goins, you should get it. While at the doctor’s office today, I was reading my copy and he was discussing the Riddle (Ridle, Ridley) family, Moses, William and Happy (Rogers) Riddle in particular. If you have the book, it starts on page 71 in a section called Melungeons at New River. A good read too!
Jim
Hello Jim….I have never heard of the surname Bowman being connected to the Melungeon’s as a group however I have seen references to them being NDN and too, the photos of them are very telling. I think that Cherokee is the primary opinion as to their heritage however I have not seen proof of that just yet.
You may likely already have this information but I wanted to pass this along to you:

Cousin Aubrey has the copies of the affidavit and deeds that also state that Hawkins Bowman and his CH were NDN, if you do not have those, I can pass a transcribed copy along to you as well.
Additionally, for Hawkins’ dau Mary (who MD Hiram Fugate) she is listed in the 1910 census in Rosehill, Lee Co, VA as Indian…I have viewed that census but have not yet transcribed it.

*I think that if you can locate a good reasonably priced person to fetch some of these DC copies they might be right helpful…wish I knew a VA researcher but at present I do not…for any of your “kin” that died in KY I do have a fella willing to retrieve DC copies for only $2.00 apiece.
If you have a family surname that died in Harlan Co, KY juts drop me an email and I’ll fetch a copy of that/those DC for you. Keep hunting….chat with you anon. Blessings~~~Laurie

Where can I find this source?

Rock….go to the VA Genweb site and locate the Lee County “parent directory”…you can scroll down all of the folders and open each online URL loci one at a time…or even “tweek” it to locate an item you are searchign for….I kinda get “lost” in those parent direcories at times and have with continued effort been able to locate some neat info. If for example the directory is for births in year 1865….you can oft times “tweek or alter” the URL in your address browser by changing the year to another one to retrieve the online file…that is precisely how I located this listing…which, by the way I inadvertently typed as Lee Co, KY….when in fact it IS Lee Co, VA…I know that this line of Bowmans went back and forth quite a bit between Lee Co, VA and also Harlan Co, KY…soem are buried in the Brittain Cemetery in Rose Hill, Lee Co, VA and apparently some may also be buried in the McLin Cemetery in the same town…when I searched for the McLin Cemetery/Graveyard I was able to see that over 100 cemeteries are within a 10 mile radius of it…now THAT would be a neat place to scour. Both cemeteries are located off of St Rt 58 which is also called the Daniel Boone Trail and when I looked at the maps, it rather suprised me just how close Harlan Co, KY was to Lee Co, VA. (I’m a true directional bimbo, *shrugs*.) Sorry I cannot be more concise with you but when I get to digging and bop into a parent directory listing…it’s all greek to me. if I can locate the exact URL in my faves I’ll certainly post it here. Blessings~~~Laurie

February 4, 2007 at 6:45 pm #25888Forgive me if I have missed the obvious, but may I ask which book this thread is about?
Thanks.
February 4, 2007 at 6:45 pm #25891The name of the book is “Melungeons: Examining An Appalachian Legend”, by Pat Spurlock Elder, available at http://www.continuitypress.com
February 4, 2007 at 6:45 pm #25892I logged in to answer, but Bill’s answer has popped up already. I’ll add that its current edition has 422 pages, copiously footnoted and indexed (in which regards, among others, it differs from most of the nonsense in print about Melungeons). Chapter Eleven, “The American Indian Connection,” pp. 139-176, includes a good bit on the Saponi. And, of course, many other tribes.
The thread started with an attempt to establish contact with the author. Mrs. Elder sometimes reads this forum, so she replied. (Her Saponitown name is PatinTN.) However, the thread has something of a life of its own.
February 4, 2007 at 6:45 pm #25893Thank you both!
February 4, 2007 at 6:45 pm #25975Wow, now THAT was some quick shipping! Took longer to type about it. ;~)
Speaking of Bowmans, don’t overlook Patrick County, VA. It’s one of my family names, too. Most of my relatives have a tendency to be fair skinned, but with varying degrees of native looking bone structure. A Bowman cousin I went to school with has the beautiful brown skin, and could pass for at least half-blood. The family tradition is Cherokee, of course.

Aubrey G Cole:
Aubrey,
infquirer has posted some info on Estill Co, KY.
http://www.saponitown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2510&page=2
And if you follow the link I posted in that thread concerning William Thomas Riddle’s father-in-law, you will see there is a Roberts/Rogers connection, most likely with his wife’s family.
February 4, 2007 at 6:45 pm #25996Rockhound;
I thank you very much for the info posted and I have just finished reading it. The Riddle connection that I was pursuing was for my wife’smother who was a Riddle , but I think that I have satisfied her quetions etc on the Riddel’s. The Rogerg conection was my mothers side , her father Taylor Dunaway whuch took me back to Issac Dunaway who married Sarah Rogers, who was the daughter of Susannah Rogers and John or Charles Rogers , may have been John Charles Rogers, that is where I am hung up at present is finding Susannah,s Husbands name (correct) and the parents of both Susannah and John, Charles Rogers.
again I thank you
as always
