Thought I would bring this back around since it’s just a few weeks off:
Sixth Annual Roanoke Island American Indian Cultural Festival & Powwow
August 8 & 9th, 2009
The Council of the Algonquian Indians of NC, Inc. wishes to invite you to join us for our Sixth Annual Roanoke Island American Indian Cultural Festival and Powwow. Just as was done last year, we will hold our Powwow on our own tribal land. This year, the Powwow will start on Saturday, August 8th, at 10:30 AM, and will end on Sunday the 9th approximately 4PM or whenever we finish. The grounds will be open to you starting on Friday the 7th of August after 2PM. Your equipment should be fine, although the tribe cannot assume liability in case of lost or stolen items. If you are camping with your tent, we will have to charge a small camping fee of $10 a day, to offset the cost of the facility and litter fee. Our grounds coordinator will be on hand to show you to your assigned vending and/or camping space. As in the past, we ask that you refrain from bringing your pets, and, of course, no drugs or alcohol will be allowed. We ask that you be set up after 2 PM on Friday the 7th of August because we may be holding School Day on the site.
Location: Airport Pavilion Lawn located on Airport Road across from the NC Aquarium, Manteo, NC, 27954. Admission: Adults: $5 (Ages 13 and above) Children: $3 (Ages 3 -12) FREE: Ages 2 and under (Due to the nature of this event, no pets or alcohol allowed in the event area.) For more information contact: Marilyn Berry Morrison 757- 477-3589
December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34027Sidenote to Manteo pow wow:
From Marilyn:
Please start spreading the word for our UNITY POWWOW 2010. We are trying to get all tribes in VA and NC to come together unite and celebrate our culture and history. Plans have not been finalized, only the date August 7 & 8, 2010 and place.
Thought I would throw that in there so those wanting to come will have time to make plans….we usually plan our vacation times around these pow wows so we can enjoy the sites of the Outer Banks as well as the pow wow.
Aho

December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34077Becky, I’m glad to here that you all have been having a very good time and the dances have been successful. Becky do you all Stomp Dance( are you a shell shaker)? We have several Stomp Grounds and Stomps in our area(Northeastern OK) although I live in MO I still have a lot of family in OK.
Our dance here in Sedalia, MO was also, a great success. We were able to visit with family and old friends. We had many dancers from as far away as the McAllen TX area(just north of Brownsville), OK, AR, KS, IN, IL, OH, FL and more. We want to thank everyone who was able to come out and enjoy themselves. We just like to have fun.
I’ll be an AD at a dance in KS the end of the month and AD in McAllen TX in Oct. I went to the Quapaw Tribal Celebration over the 4th of July holiday. Our family has a Quapaw campsite there.
If anyone is intersted, the Ottawa Tribe of OK will have their annual celebration over the Labor day Weekend. This is in the Miami OK area. They have day money and plenty of camping space.
December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34079Hi Bob
We had a absolute blast at Manteo, even though it was hot. The hosts were quite gracious and we were able to camp on the grounds and save a few dollars. There is also a park nearby that I didn’t know about…going swimming there next year!
In answer to your question, no, I don’t stomp dance or shake shells. I use a lot of shells in my regalia, however since my folks came from down east and james river area.
Glad you had a good turnout for your pow wow. I have some family in OK as well, but never been out there. You will have to come east some time and let us show you how different the pow wows can be. We will be traveling to King this weekend to dance for our veterans and see our native american family. That is a good feeling pow wow….last year there was not a dry eye in the place on the Veteran’s dance.

December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34097Red Hawks Gathered Nations City of King Pow Wow It was a Wonderful Pow Wow. We had a great time with our family and friends that were their. We missed the ones that weren’t, but I’m sure they had a good time where they were. It was hot, very hot, but the host had water and gaterade for the dancers so it was easy to stay hydrated. I got to see alot of dances I haven’t seen before. And I lauged so hard at the potato and broom dance that my sides hurt from laughing. There were alot of vendors there, but I stayed so interested in the dancing that I didn’t visit many of them. My husband’s favorite buffloburger vendor was there. I can’t wait to hear about the fun from our family that stayed for Sunday. cindi
December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34100Just one word to describe Sunday…………WOW!!

December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34101I concur – WOW
December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34277Taking a survey. who all is going to be at the Stuart, Va Pow wow next month? White Dove if you’re there I’m going to get you to read something for me. Becky I hope you had a great birthday with lots of Chocolate Cake. I hear Bee and Sandy have a new Tent. One that doesn’t leak.
December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34280We are planning on being at Stuart….may be even go up on Friday if it’s Creator’s will.
Just to renew the information:
Thanks to Beeleaf, we now have the information for the 2nd Pow Wow in Stuart, VA.
Oct. 2-4, 2009 at the Rotary Field, which is the same place it was held last year.
Here’s the link to the flyer.
http://www.wolfcreekcherokeetribe.co…keepowwow.html
And I have heard there will not be any charge for dancers even though the flyer says otherwise.
December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34294I’m headed out next week on a road trip visiting relatives up and down the east coast, and I plan to powwow in Stuart. Fair warning to those going that I’ve met before, I don’t remember faces, so you’ll have to find me. Should be easy, I dance ladies northern traditional with a hat of some sort, wear lots of Pendleton wool, and have a rig with Oregon plates.
December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34325Sorry I didn’t get back on to report on Town Creek, but it was a good pow wow even though it rained a couple of times. There weren’t but three vendors and a couple of food vendors….and a good sprinkling of dancers…mostly due to the fact that there were four pow wows on the same weekend…that divides everyone to attending the one closest to them usually. But, the spirit was good and Birdchoppers was rocking….and it was good to share the day with our native family.
December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34349Safe travels, Spilleddi. See ya soon!
December 30, 2008 at 3:56 pm #34381Anyone know what time Wolf Creek grand entry on Saturday is? The flyer says 9:30 am, but I’ve never heard of a powwow starting before noon.
