I found a different tree which states:
Chester Harrell b.16 Aug. 1756 Frederick, Virginia,
Marriage to Betsy Stephens 2 June 1789 Bardstown, Nelson, KY (documented)
1820 residence on census for Franklin co. IN.
It also lists Chesters parents as William and Susanna.
If these are indeed Phillips parents, it would appear he must have been their firstborn,
as his birth is listed as 1788, but that year may have been a guess as to his age on the
census of 1850, which does confirm Phillip as being born in KY, and 62 in 1850.
Other trees list his birth year as 1789.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36799Or, possibly he was born before marriage.
..still not 9 mo. after June according to this marriage date if he were born same year of marriage..
But I have found conflicting ages along with name variations on different census records before
for other ancestors, so who knows.
Not to mention, numbers scramble my brain, so I may not even be making sense.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36800In a different tree again,
It lists Chesters birth as recorded in a bible page photo that’s the same as recorded by the other tree..
However, this tree has two wives for Chester.
First being, H Everett, of which four children are born (no Phillip listed)
Elijah, James, and Isaac (1770) and youngest child Elizabeth b.1785.
Rather large gap in children though. He may be missing if he belongs there to begin with.
I question some of this anyway, considering Chesters age of 14 at Issacs birth would be 14.
No other information for “H Everett”.
With the second wife as Betty Stevens and nine children. Again no Phillip.
Margaret Harrell – 1881
William Harrell – 1835
Hannah Harrell1794 – 1877
Editha Harrell1796 –
Stephen S Harrell1797 – 1860
Susan Harrell1803 –
Elisha Harrell1807 – 1882
Edmund Harrell1809 – 1857
Jane Harrell1811 – 1886
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36822I’ve been trying to make sense of the differing accounts among Harrell trees here.
What seems consistent across the board is a migration pattern of VA->KY->IN. In particular Bardstown and Nelson County in Kentucky, Frederick County in VA and Franklin county in Indiana. However, there are other VA/NC counties they came from and other Indiana counties they went to.
Chester Harrell made the full migration, born 16 Aug 1756 in Frederick VA, married to Betsy Stephens 2 Jun 1789 in Bardstown KY and died 1820 aged 64 in Franklin Co Indiana. The marriage and death have sources. He was named with his mother and father’s surnames. Susannah Chester (1732?-1757?) and William Harrell (1736?-1822?) Susannah Chester’s parents were Thomas Chester 1689-1759 amd Sarah Cartmell 1700-1759. They were Quakers.
From another researcher:
Cpt. Thomas Chester & his wife Sarah Cartmell were Quakers. They came to Shenadoah Valley from Philadlphia in 1735. Cpt. Chester bought over 5000 acres along the Shenandoah river where the town of Front Royal, Virginia is now. He was a sheriff of Frederick Co. from 1745-1747. The main street in Front Royal is Chester Street, named for him. As is the Chester Gap in the Blue Ridge mountains. He also opperated a ferry service across the Shanandoah River where the North & South forks of that river converge.
I found another researcher who searched Nelson County marriage bonds:
Henry Cotton married Mary Harrell, daughter of William Harrell. This
William Harrell is one of the 6 sons of Richard Harrell b. abt 1700 VA who
lived in Augusta/Frederick Co., VA and died abt 1758. This William Harrell
moved to Nelson Co., KY in the early 1780s and was a large land owner. This
William Harrell married Susannah Chester in VA around 1750. The only
children of this marriage we are sure of are Mary, John, Chester; he
probably had additional sons James and Isaac. There may be more sons but
there is no hard evidence of their being.
This would mean my my Mary Harrell b.1765 and Chester Harrell b.1756 were brother and sister, or half brother and sister. If Susannah Chester unsourced death date of 1757 at age 25 is correct they must have had different mothers.

The birth years are close, but wifes have different name…It does appear that
Susanna died rather young. One possibility is that Martha was a second wife
if these are found to be the same William.
I think this is the case. I found a surname and marriage date for Martha – Martha Wimberley born about 1750, died about 1850, married William Harrell 1765 (29 years old) in NC.
Susannah Chester died at 25 years old 1732-1757. So it would make sense that Chester Harrell was her child with William, and Mary Harrell was a child with Martha Wimberley.
From what I am seeing it appears that Richard Harrell 1700-1758 had two wives as well. Elizabeth Love 1717-1759 (42 years old) and Martha Padgett 1725-?.
I’m wondering if this Elizabeth Love is connected to the Love’s in this thread that AmeliaNC recently added a post to:

Given Phillips approximate birth year(s) , I wonder if Chester and Betsy are the parents of Phillip, or at least Betsy.
I’m still at a loss to certainly confirm what Harrell parented Phillip at this point, though I assume he is relation.
There is also the possibilities of him being “illegitimate”, or of another mother such as the H Everett I posted above.
So far, I’m pretty sure Phillip was born in KY. 1850 census says that’s his birth state. It also says he is 62, which puts his birth year about 1788. His grave says 12 Oct 1787.
I hope to stumble across something to clear this up. I haven’t found it yet.

Thanks to a simple map, I realized today how close Chester and Phillip lived to each other.
Franklin County is neighbor to Decatur County, where Phillip settled and rests.
Phillip is in Nelson KY in 1810, Dearborn IN in 1820 (next to, and under Franklin, and Decatur (next to, and west of Franklin) from 1830 on.
To me, this makes it more probable to agree Chester was the father of Phillip, as some trees claim.
The confirmation might be found in digging up Chester’s first wife.
Its not much, but encouraged me to press on.
Im also not finding much on Jesse at all.
I wondered if my Phillip is actually the son of Phillip, and Jesses brother? But nothing adds up.
I see a Phillip 14 yrs on 1850 Census with Phillip Sr.
Is my Phillip living with his grandfather? The age doesn’t match grandson Phillip or son Phillip though.
My Phillip b. 1843 is not the same birth year as Phillip Sr. son Phillip you listed above as “Phillip Marion Harrell 1830 – 1864”.
Again, nothing adds up.
With so many Phillips, you’d think one would find more records of them.
Pressing on…
On a side note, I’ve noticed many Harrell’s migrating north through Indiana and OH in the early 1800s.
One William in 1818, Green Co, a few counties west of Franklin and Decatur, and another family of Harrells from
Butler Co, just across the Ohio line from Franklin to Paulding OH further north in OH and on the IN line.

If it is my Phillip with his grandfather, its the only record of him in childhood Ive been able to find so far…
Hence my wondering of his father, yet his grave says Jessie is his father. So its a matter of filling in the pieces
with Jessie really. As well as connecting Phillip Sr and Chester…more so really.

December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36860Ive tried to contact the owner of this site regarding Chester being a father for Phillip, but
Guess I wont hear back since its undeliverable e-mail response I got twice now.

I have a lot of relations in early Butler County. Direct relations through Drybread, Charlton, Potter, Beeler, Kyger, and Sager/Seiger ancestors. As well as indirect Routh and Douglass relations. The descendants of my Harrell ancestors (Marshall/Cotton) were in Ohio at this time but I cannot narrow down the specific county.

It is interesting how these people seemed to stick close to each other for a few generations. I would assume they must have known each other because of that.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36869I have the Nelson County, KY marriage bond book. Initial check of where it used to be in the house when I used it to prove my Rev War patriot who settled in Bardstown failed to turn it up, but I believe I do still have it. I briefly considered donating it to the Newberry Library (where I found other Ky resources, I might add. I proved my Hopkinsville, Ky patriots through their records. If you check their catalog for what you need, when next I go there, I may be able to look something up. I plan to head there to pursue my Mayflower ancestor sometime this spring.) here in Chicago.
My surnames from around Bardstown may/may not be helpful as often groups moved together and certainly intermarried (None is listed in my surname list, as I did not know of them when I wrote my signature line and there is no hint of native ancestry in these lines.). My Gideon Walker came from MD, where he married into the Duvall family. From there, he and his wife briefly resided in Western PA where he was in the militia (making him one of my DAR patriots). From PA, he and a contingent of Duvall family settled near Bardstown. However, his son who is in my direct line moved into Indiana near New Albany.
Other surnames that converge into my great-grandmother, Sallie Schollars: Morton, Schollars (in Beaver, PA), Arkwright, Davis, Gordon, Talbot, Wright, and other names that are many generations back in VA.
Locations: Bedford County, VA (Wright. Talbot, and Gordon), MD and Western PA (Duvall and Walker), Richmond, VA (Davis), Henrico County, VA (Morton), and Western PA (Schollars and Arkwright). Oh, and there is also a Chiles surname from Spotsylania, VA.
All of these lines are proven for me.

December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36879Thank you for help Techteach. It is curious that we have ancestors in
the same counties of different states.
What are the years you have residence for Nelson Co and Beaver Co?
I don’t know that I have those surnames but I may find them in my searches.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36882Gideon Walker moved from MD to western PA and is found in Fayette, PA in 1788. He moves to Bardstown in 1800 with his family. His son marries a Dutch or German woman there and then leaves for Indiana.

My Peter Lance and David Parks are in Beaver PA in 1810. They then went to OH by 1820.
I recently found Peter in Washington Co, south of Beaver in 1800, but he is on the Beaver
tax list by 1805.
Interesting to note a descendant of those men married a descendant of the Harrells of Bardstown in Indiana
where they all ended up..
