I recently found Peter in Washington Co, south of Beaver in 1800, but he is on the Beaver
tax list by 1805.
Interesting to note a descendant of those men married a descendant of the Harrells of Bardstown in Indiana
where they all ended up..
As I got away from just my direct lines and started studying the migration patterns of siblings and cousins, I find multiple locations where later generations of my mothers lines (Person co,NC) and my father’s lines (Floyd co,VA 200 miles away) cross paths and marry. When I found the first location, I was amazed that the families were destined to be together even if my mom and dad had not met. As I find more interconnections, I realize that although they started in different locations, they all followed the same mixed-blood migration patterns.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36962Good point Dreaminghawk. Funny you should mention that.
Just today I was taking a closer look at some tips Ancestry left me.
It gave me some census records for Elizabeth Parks. Davids wife.
Evidently he has passed in these years as he’s on on them.
I went with other trees that said they had migrated to Congress OH,
which is where the 1850 and 60 census records were I found today.
Because they go along with the location, they are easy to accept.
The last verified location I have of David is Richland OH 1820.
The other tip I wasn’t sure about, put Elizabeth in Flemming KY
in 1880. I was familiar with this county because my Soloman Yeazel
was born there. Soloman moved to OH. Solomans son, married
Jeretta Teal, granddaughter of Elizabeth Parks in IN. Jeretta is the line that
claims blackfoot. I don’t have names of all Elizabeth and Davids
children to know if this Andrew is one of their children.
The other thing is, it would put her much older than the trees I got my
info from, that say she died in Congress OH at younger age. Anything
unverified is subject to change I suppose. But I have more digging to do
before I will be comfortable with just rolling with it. Not that going with
unverified trees feels any more secure.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36963On-line family trees such as worldconnect can be a great starting point. Occasionally you can find an excellent well documented tree but most are c&p from other trees and some just make you shake your head and laugh. I have seen children born before their parents,100year olds having children and other anomalies 😉 Don’t some people even read what they are typing?
When you can make the connection to an early family (pre 1750) then most of the records have been found and most of the info you find on-line will be pretty well accepted as true. (at least as true as the paper trail is;-)
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36964I’ve noticed the same on trees myself. I have to take anything from an undocumented tree with caution, knowing there are so many contradictions and such as you mentioned. One tree gives different parents than another and so on. I see people change names to similar variants of someone else that I know is not correct. I’m even looking into a will someone posted. They don’t say where it came from, its just typed out what the will said, and is dated several years after the person supposidly died. Id love it to be true, but I’m not trusting it without some answers, or even if a picture of original I could change a death date. I take this so seriously that it drives me crazy without that proof needed to verify what your putting down. Otherwise you might as well be guessing. I’ve changed my own tree because something didn’t line up. I’ve got mine as private just because I don’t want to add to that mess of chaos and mislead someone else untill I know my Ts are crossed and Is dotted. As it goes for now, subject to change.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36965Right on about the paper trail as well. I mean, how many different spellings of a name is there on census records alone? Subject to human error also. I swear I don’t know the true spelling of one of my ancestors first name. Every single document has it spelled slightly different. No wonder he hated his name and called himself Levi.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36966Also, I’ve found multiple marriage records on line of one ancestor who was married in Whitley co. The other says White because someones typo somewhere along the lines.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36967Unless they married in two different counties on the same day just for kicks. Lol jk
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36968I think I forgot to mention, Jeretta Teal and “Levi” Yeazel son, married Phillip E Harrells daughter. I think the older posts will bring it all together. That is the connection I mentioned before but didn’t specify.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36969I also eventually want to see photocopies of the original documents the critical info comes from. My skills at reading old english cursive may be better than some Ancestry intern. For instance, I’ve seen Bass indexed as Bafs and so on. I was in my heyday when on-line census records were unindexed Jpegs of the cursive pages. There is an art to reading it. Another example, one of my ancestors, John Satterfield is usually found as John I. Satterfield, some trees are so bold as to say John Isaac Satterfield. (He had a son named Isaac). I have a copy of the landgrant from Lord Granville. John Satterfield could not read or write. He signed with his mark… an arrow pointing up. The scribe of the document wrote John on one side of the mark and Satterfield on the other side. While there is a bit of controversy on-line, if you look closely at the original document, it is quite obvious.
One of Becky’s ancestors on-line has her brother named as her father and the clerk of court as her mother. That myth found its way into one of the first trees to go on-line and is now repeated in maybe 50 or more trees.
Becky and I do not have on-line family trees (except what info we have put here at Saponitown) We have family sheets and photocopies and folders and binders and boxes that fill a room 😉
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36971I don’t doubt you are a professional Dreaminghawk 🙂
I’ve seen Ancestry list peoples names wrong because of misinterpreting the cursive.
To be honest, I have a hard time reading some of it myself. Its quite refreshing when you come across a
neatly written census.
I do need to get more organized, and get hardcopies of many documents.
As of now what I do have is in a trapper keeper, and many many notebooks lol.
I was given a cd to download a treemaker on my old computer many years ago. One day it just mysteriously
went blank, and I lost all the work I had put into it. Sock in the gut.
For now, my online tree is helping me keep organized as a quick reference to whos who, and when and wheres.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36972Roots Magic is a good tool for ferreting out obvious errors like parents supposedly dying before their children were born or 100 year old women giving birth. If you download a gedcom from Ancestry and plug it into Roots Magic it will flag records like that. It also corrects locations, like telling you a county didn’t exist at a certain date, or suggesting British North America instead of USA pre-1776. Much of our families genealogy is paper, but as a computer guy I’m trying to get it all online as well. Computer records are no different than paper. Multiple copies are important to protect from data loss, fire, flood, etc. I keep DVD backups in a fire-proof safe, keep USB hard drive backups at another site, and do online backups. Our Ancestry tree with the Harrell’s is still private at the moment while we try to eliminate any cut&paste type errors, after that we will make it public.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36974Good advice Marc. I have a lot of work to do.
Marc posted earlier:
“From another researcher:
Cpt. Thomas Chester & his wife Sarah Cartmell were Quakers. They came to Shenadoah Valley from Philadlphia in 1735. Cpt. Chester bought over 5000 acres along the Shenandoah river where the town of Front Royal, Virginia is now. He was a sheriff of Frederick Co. from 1745-1747. The main street in Front Royal is Chester Street, named for him. As is the Chester Gap in the Blue Ridge mountains. He also opperated a ferry service across the Shanandoah River where the North & South forks of that river converge.
I found another researcher who searched Nelson County marriage bonds:
Henry Cotton married Mary Harrell, daughter of William Harrell. This
William Harrell is one of the 6 sons of Richard Harrell b. abt 1700 VA who
lived in Augusta/Frederick Co., VA and died abt 1758. This William Harrell
moved to Nelson Co., KY in the early 1780s and was a large land owner. This
William Harrell married Susannah Chester in VA around 1750. The only
children of this marriage we are sure of are Mary, John, Chester; he
probably had additional sons James and Isaac. There may be more sons but
there is no hard evidence of their being.”
Im a bit thrown today Marc…trying to filter one William from another..
Evidently, there is more than one William Harrell. How he is related, and
separating them is making my head spin.
In looking up tips on him today Ive come across several leads…
A will of a William Harrell

I see there is also a William Harrell who drew a pension as a Rev. War veteran of VA.
As well, an application for a headstone for a Rev war vet of VA buried in IN.
Enlisted first at Amherst co VA 1776, three more times of other companies till discharge 1781.
Name William Horrall or Harrell, born 1757 Albemarle VA.
Buried Shanks cemetery, Washington, Daviess co IN. No death date.
I assume this is still him, though the cemetery name is different..rev war vet
Name:William Horrall
Cemetery:Old Bethel Cem
Location: Daviess Co IN
I assume this also, is not our direct William?
Name:William Harrell
Gender:Male
Spouse Name:Susanah Florey
Marriage Date:26 Sep 1818
County:Wythe
State:Virginia
Other tidbits…
Name:William Harrell
State:NC
County:Bertie County
Year:1769
Database:NC Early Census Index
Name:William Harrell
State:VA
County:Frederick County
Year:1782
Record Type:Continental Census
Database:VA Early Census Index
Name:William Harrall
Home in 1810:Pughtown, Frederick, Virginia
Name:William Harrell
Home in 1820:Evensham, Scott, Virginia
Can I be safe to assume the William from Frederick Co VA are our same William?
I want to assume one William is a son of William. Possibly the one mentioned in the will?
Considering the similar places, migrations, and so on, must be relation.
Did he buy land in KY and go back to VA?
I’m curious also, as to why not all of his children would be listed on the will, other than the others
would have been to far away to consider at the time?
Just trying to make sense of it all.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36975I really hope there are not a dozen William Harrells out there within a generation of eachother…
I might add, the tree with the will says Williams father is Jacob Harrell born 1710 Northumberland VA. Unverified.
Is he relation to Richard Harrell then? It makes me wonder just how many early Harrells there were.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #36976If the tips I get can be considered complete, it almost seems like there may be three Williams..
A father, son and another of NC?
Name:William Harrell
Birth Date:1750
Birthplace:North Carolina
Volume:73
Page Number:28
Reference:
Heads of fams. at the first U.S. census. NC. By U.S. Bureau of the Census. Washington, 1908. (292p.):18
1784-87 Bertie Co NC census has this William Harrell still in NC it seems.
I would guess this is the possible son of William Harrell of the will put not positive..
The William of Daviess IN is found on 1830-40 census.
He also re-married…
Name:William Horrall
Spouse:Elender Wallace
Marriage Date:28 May 1823
