There are a lot of different versions of the genealogy for James Cadrous Harrell. I can’t see a direct genalogical link, but they must be related to mine somehow as I have a Harrell-Cotton marriage in Bardstown in 1787. With Harrell coming from Bertie NC and Cotton from VA. Judging by DNA evidence there must be some common ancestors who are not widely recorded or recorded at all.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #37482I thought it was rather interesting that both of the James Harrells I found on my search had married different Cotton women. Interesting that you have this in your line also.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #37493Ok, many thanks to Cathie again for the information! She has shared with me the site where all this information is being collected, sorted, and studied on the Harrells. http://www.harrellcollaborative.com/
From what I understand, there is at least four James Harrells in Nelson KY
Apparently, the one likely to be a potential father to Philip b.1787 is:
James Herral b. abt 1762 VA, d. abt 1836 Daviess Co., KY is son of Moses Harrell (s/o Richard Harrell 1700) and married Elizabeth Crume. This James Herral 1762 had a son James D. Harrell b. abt 1784 VA, d. bef 1831 Nelson Co., KY.
Amazing to see! They’ve obviously done a lot of researching the Harrells there. Thanks again Cathie for your contribution to them as well as here! Please do add anything relevant I am leaving out.
Now I am curious as to the connection these other James Harrells and how the Cotton families tie in, even if it turns out they are not in my lines. As well, how some tie into Saponi families.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #37494I do have the early 1800s Nelson County,KY marriage records, maybe tax too.

Thank you! That might come in handy. These developements are exiting and intimidating at the same time with there being so many of the same name to confuse…I’m not sure what to ask.
I found a James Harrell on a1810 census with a son old enough to be Phillip, and also one of the same year that Ancestry labeled “Plus P” Harrell that someone had edited to say Phillip and was also in his age range.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #37496One thing Ive noticed from this site is the differing information on Jesse Ray Harrell.
The Harrell site says,
Jesse Ray Harrell b. 1822 Decatur or Dearborn Co IN, d. bef 1860 IN;
Other trees had listed his info as,
Birth 10 August 1810 in KY, Death 30 December 1890 in Marshall IN
Quite the contrast. I already know there is also more than one Jesse, so maybe that has caused a confusion with information. Really makes me feel the need to back up and regroup.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #37563From A Freeman DNA cousin:
Sarah Bryant – daughter of Elizabeth Harrell marries William Warren Brand and they have son Jonas Thomas Brand about 1788 in Edgecombe Co. NC. Not long after they are all in Georgia. This line marries into Goodman and Harris before Freeman.

There is a link is in the text of my last reply. It’s hard to see though, her site is DNA-explained.com
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #37652Your right, I didn’t see it till you said it was there and I went back and zoomed in. Viewing from my tiny phone screen didn’t help. Thanks!
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #37722Recently I found the marriage notation of Phillip Harrell and Catherine Reading (Redding ) marriage in Butler Co. Ohio in 1812. My question relates to the birth date that many have stated of Jesse Ray . I cant find any evidence of his birth or death only marriage. As for his birth in 1810 P Harrell his father was in Kentucky .but Phillip Edward Harrell b 1843 ,states that his father was born in Indiana . Anyone have any thoughts ?
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #37733My best guess is there are more than one, if not many Jesse Harrells.
I haven’t had any luck finding records for Jesse either. He’s quite the mystery….as if this whole family isn’t.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #37734I ended up starting another Harrell tree with the info on the Harrell site, so I could see it as that group says it goes. I added the Crauns or Crones to it also as you’ve shown me. I haven’t found anything further to prove or disprove any of it. I’ve been way to busy lately to dig into much, and to be honest have found myself flustrated with much of it.
December 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm #37739Sorry to here you are so busy, but the DNA that I had done for my father proved that he was related to James Harrell b. 1765 in Shenandoah Valley Va. Father was Moses Sr. Harrell b. 1730 Shenandoah Valley, Va. and died in Nelson County Ky. All this information came from a member of ancestry who had done the research C. Hairrell . It is one of the most complete history of Harrell that I have seen. I never recognized the connection since the spelling was different. After the test results came back with DNA connection showed as distance cousin 4-6. I have spent some time over in the library in Plymouth, Indiana and in contact with several of our distant cousins who have done great work on the Crow and Maxson side. Later this winter I will be flying out to a workshop in Salt Lake Utah to do research. As always,
Take Care,
