If you can trace them back to an Edmund & Mary Noe Osburn (my ancestors), then they would be related to my lines.
My Gibson ancestress, Nancy Gibson came from Pennsylvania to Ohio, eventually into the Carmel area (d/o Henry Gibson) with no Osborn, or varient, ties known. Osburn ancestors are maternal, Gibson ancestors are paternal. So on my end anyway, I have no Gibson/Osburn connection prior to my parents marriage…thus my birth.
I haven’t been in contact with her for some time, but last time we communicated she was tending the Gibson cemetery in the Grundy area.
These Osborns may not be connected, just thought I’d try.

July 17, 2006 at 8:56 pm #32144I have read and reviewed all of this and feel that we should remember where we came from and that our heritage and history has been disected by people since they arrived here. This to me is an obvious reason why my family is so secretive. (even to me)
I have noticed in alot of research that has been done on the Goinstown Indians that it is pure speculation in order to try to explain something that people do not know about.(human nature)
For example: It says that the prominent names are Goins, Hickman, Harris, Richardson and Kimmons. I believe the article is referring to names found in the Goinstown area today. In the 1850 Rockingham Co, Western Division census you don’t find any Kimmons, only one Hickman family listed as white, and all of the Richardsons are listed as white.
My family is Goins, Hickman, Harris and Kimmons. Someone with a pen and paper didn’t write you down where would you research it? But you will find that they commuted back and forth over the mountain. If you don’t find them in the Eastern District of Rockingham County you will need to look in Stokes and don’t forget Henry County or as it was back then Pitslyvania County in Va.
If I shared whatever I found I would want it to be with people in search of the same answers as me who have the same mind set. Which is why I joined this website.
Stories that I have: There are 2 goins families from what I am told that there are the Indians and then there were the english people.
When my grandmother was living she told me that goins originally was how the white man spelled it and that they thought it was goins from sound but it was really Goe. The e being long . My grandmother was a Kimmons and she married a Goins. He was her second cousin. My gr gma was a Hickman. And of course I have Harris cousins. I do not show any link yet from my family to the Richardsons. I will keep researching.
My message to Infquirer – When researching don’t forget to consider where people were due to what was going on. And who may have been going back and forth from N.C. to Oklahoma between 1838-1870.
Summer of 1838 – the Trail of Tears.
Good luck to you !
July 17, 2006 at 8:56 pm #32147I have Harris lineage where are your Harris’s from?
July 17, 2006 at 8:56 pm #32153Hello Goinsnut,
I’ve been away from the computer for a long time due to work and other pressures and saw your post by accident (someone asked me to pull up the thread to show them). I’m very happy to have mistakes in the thread corrected. If you or anyone else see them (I’m sure there’s more) please correct them.
Stories that I have: There are 2 goins families from what I am told that there are the Indians and then there were the english people.
I think you’re saying that the Indian Goins came from 2 different families and that they are unrelated to other white Goins who happened to have the same last name. Is that right? Were the 2 Indian Goins families related?
When my grandmother was living she told me that goins originally was how the white man spelled it and that they thought it was goins from sound but it was really Goe. The e being long .
I think that’s important. Do you hear what the word Goe may have meant? If not perhaps someone can tie it to an Indian word.
Do you have any other information you could share on any of your families, Hickman, Kimmons as well as Goins
July 17, 2006 at 8:56 pm #32174Dharden –
My main research is on Goins.
I will give the lineage to one of the places that Harris meets
Bud Goins and Mary Rakestraw Goins- Stokes County and Rockingham County,NC – Snow Creek
Children:
Mar 1890 Joe H. 1892 Flint Feb 1896 Sam James Oct 1898 Mae Belle 1903 Charlie 1905 Johnny Dolphus 1909 Nannie Mae Belle Goins married Calvin Harris – I have asked my Harris cousin to give me particulars so that I could give you accurate info.
I am waiting to hear back from her and I will give you
Thanks
Renee

goi (go ee) is a Cherokee word. Meaning would be oil or grease.
Got frybread? ;~)
Just one possibility.
July 17, 2006 at 8:56 pm #32176Inquirer –
That is correct – My grandmother was saying that the 2 goins families are unrelated. She told me of graves that had the name Goe. ( keep in mind she is talking about her husbands family, my grandfather, because he never wanted to talk about it )
I have not seen them and she said that there are some in a cemetary in N.C. and there are also some near the old homeplace,i.e. probably covered by brush and woods by now. I spoke to someone who said that they believe that GOE wasn’t Indian it was just someone who couldn’t spell. But I am like you I am willing to take every avenue.
There were rough times for alot of people and men were leaving their wives and sometimes 8-10 children behind and going North.
The new sets of children of these men were NOT TO BE RECOGNIZED.
I strongly believe that is why the WALL got thicker. These children are up North working on genie.
My gr aunt received a phone call and she was in her 80’s this happened 13 years ago when she got the call from a girl in PA claiming to be kin from my gr aunts father’s second wife. She was livid. She didn’t feel that the caller had any right to what my gr aunt’s father left behind. (not money – birthright)
I am told that Mary Goins was born in Oklahoma – She is my gr gr grandmother. I have not obtained confirmation on that – I am like you too trying to rely on things that people wrote down.
I am also told that Flint Goins – my gr grandfather lived on the reservation – but there is no record written down.
There are few elders left but many stories are still there and . . . . if you can get them to tell the story.
Let’s go forward together !

There were a lot of Mary Goins in Surry, Stokes, Rockingham Counties. There were two living beside my McBride and Hemmings ancestors in the 1870 Surry County census. This google map http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=map+mcbride+road+surry+county+north+carolina&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&resnum=1&ct=image shows where they lived on what is now McBride Road. Pan right one click and you’ll see Brim road where my father’s ancestors Gilah Bowman who married Josepth Brim lived. It’s only about 4 miles away. Goins lived here too. Notice that both places are less than a mile and a half from the Virginia line. Since Gilah Bowman’s relatives were marrying into Goins, Riddles and Harris families, I believe that Gilah Bowman is related to tarcarion’s Hawkins Bowman ancestor who had Catawba noted by his name in the census. (http://www.saponitown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2231.
I was wondering if your Mary Goins could have been the Mary Goins at family and dwelling no. 243 in the 1870 Surry County census. Mary A. Goins is married to William H. Goins at no 244. William H Going married Mary Kimball on 01/25/1853 in Surry County. My great grandmother Augusta Hemmings mother’s name is Elizabeth K. McBride with some people saying the K. is for Kimball.
July 17, 2006 at 8:56 pm #32185I have a Jane Gwin b. 1762 in Orange Co. NC. Now, could this Jane Gwin be of this Goins,Goings Gowens etc.. family with just a variation of the spelling?
The reason I ask is that I really don’t have much to go on with this Family.
July 17, 2006 at 8:56 pm #32195Cherosage,
From what I’ve seen so far, Gwin is also Gwinn, Gwynne, Wynne and even Winn. Mordecai left his will listed under Gwinn. Can’t find any last name for wife Elizabeth. He born in Va c1720. I can’t even remember what I typed in but I googled and ended up with Melungeon related surnames with Gwin as also see Winn in 1850 Va. census. Thought that was interesting. Mordecai’s will lists his children. Saj
July 17, 2006 at 8:56 pm #32196Hmm, this may be a good place for these little bits and pieces (links below).
Wrote to Jack Goins awhile back and he said he is working on an update to his book.

This one has some neat photos, including one of the school as it looked in 1950…the school is the little building in Jack Goins’ trip photos.
July 17, 2006 at 8:56 pm #32197The researchers are right about these families going back and forth from NC to VA. Recognize several of y’all’s names being “our” neighbors in Patrick County.
Have also seen a death record that lists the C.O.D. as “shot by Kimball”.
Goinsnut, were your Hickmans also known as Rickman? If so, they may be on lists of FPC’s for either Patrick or Henry CO in 1800’s. Have seen some of same people on those lists described as Indian in other places.
July 17, 2006 at 8:56 pm #32264Just to let you guys know that I lost my hard drive in T.S. Hannah and I am slipping into the forum at lunch.
Beeleaf – I am not sure if my Hickmans are Rickman yet..
Infquirer- I responded to you previously about Kimmons but I was going from memory instead of quoting sources..Bad Girl.. Bad Girl… I was thinking of Tildy Kimmons people going back and forth over the mountain.. But Tildy’s family was Cox. Kimmons was her married name.
I was in the middle of saving my info to discs and flash drives after Hannah came thru and a tree fell on a power line and killed my hard drive, oven, TV’s and all of my surge protectors.
So I will have to refer to most of my hard copies and info saved on websites to come back to you.
In some of my research I have seen Kimmons as Kinmans – but it may just be misspelling.
🙂
