Good Morning All, Winter is definately here, eh?!! Here in Indiana its 8 degrees this morning. Good news is the wind has died down~for now. Also the Sun is shinning:)!! How bout others? Whats the weather like in your “neck~of~the~woods”? ~Have a great Sunday~ Greydove:cool: ~^~
Cold with several inches of snow on the ground. I have just not made the mental transition to winter. Seems like just a couple of weeks ago, I was wearing sandals.

It’s chilly out here. Did you know the end of Winter marked the Adoption Ceremony for the Siouans? March 20th was the day of the Adoption Ceremony when outsiders was adopted into the tribe to replace those who died…..those who died and had to walk the left path would be reincarnated on March 20th and the soul would be put int he body of the new adoptees…each adoptee acquired one soul. March 20th is a important day for Siouans…probally for the Algonkians also since the Algonkians and the Siouans was nearly exactly alike.
March 20th marked the day between winter and spring….we know the left path was winter and the right path was spring…..March 20th marked the day when those 2 paths would become one agian and allowing the left path walkers back to earth.

Hi Joseph, I did not know about the Adoption Ceremony of the Siouans with the significance of Winter~Spring~etc~ Thanks for that info~ My son was born on 23 day of March, but he began his birth into the world on the 20 (start of labor). Here in Minnesota we are in the 20’s and have about 3 inches of snow on the ground. We had a nice long fall, which is always nice…5 months of winter can get long…lol.
My favorite thing this time of year, is to curl up on the couch in the evening in front of the fire (we have a corn stove) and read a good book…watch the snow fall…trees heavy laden…enjoy the deer meandering through the yard…:) Ooh, sounds like a good plan for this evening:) Blessings,

Hey Samma…you should check out this book by Scott Dawson…I’ve been reading it the last few days…..you’ll be very interested in it. it’s called Croatoan: Birthplace of america.
I’m also going to be reading “Roanoke” by Lee Miller.
The Lee miller book has references to the Occaneechi. It also talks about how there was some real dirty tricks going on with the English colonies in America and England…..some really scandalist stuff was going on back then with the whole ordeal. Like the fact that England’s government did not even want the lost colony found at all….they did alot to try and hide the fact that there was even a tribe called Croatoan……there was even a bunch of secret letters going on with the Queen concerning the colony.
It took me nearly a year to fully understand the adoption ceremony Greywolf. I’ve told Kareen Wood I would figure all the stuff out eventually…she did not think I would be able to figure stuff out more than what was already known, She told me there was just not enough documentation available, I don’t think she realized how smart I am though 🙂
What I did was talk to professors up at the universities in Virginia about the Rapidan mound in Orange county, VA…like what was found and stuff…..they said the bones was not buried in special fashions..said the bones had been stored somewhere and then apprently on a special day all the bones was collected in bags or baskets and all dumped together without any special items….they was just being jumped….nearly every one of the bones was buried without any skin..and apprently this was done on a special day and a ceremony was probally done on that day…….ok so I searched the algonkian records and found they would keep their dead in a special house to be stored and watched over by a idol which among other names was called Okee (fashioned after the Florida tribes)….so hey there was the storage thing the professors told me. So I thought…what would be done to dead bodies being stored? Of course the flesh would have to be stripped to get smell and disease down and to keep animals away….so now we have the storage of bodies and the stripping of flesh. Now for why the bones was not buried in a special fashion or with any items…..now the professors told me the mound would have a hole dug inside it and all the bones dumped into that hole (mass dropping of bones in one place per burial time). So I went back to Ned Bearskin’s religion story……winter to the left, Spring to the right, and walking down a path in the “Middle”…..the people that went to the left path aka winter would spend a time there and then be reincarnated….of course we know about people today saying they was another person in a past life etc etc…..so going by that we could say the bones of the dead was of no real importance because the soul would be reincarnated into a new person….no items buried because they probally went to the person who the dead spirit went into. Then we know about Speck talking about the Tutelo Adoption ceremony……so there would be the reincarnation process…adoption…new person…time when the dead soul comes back to earth and enters a -new- person. So then I needed to know when this would happen….so I went back to study Cahokia…every equinox tribes like the Choctaw will come there for a special ceremony (Cahokia just like the aztec, egyptians, stonehenge, and mayans all built their structures based on stars and equionox)…….so I knew there was something special with the Eqiounox……so I sat around for awhile and then thought….hmm what happens at the end of winter and why did bearskin say the right path was spring time and not summer time…..well I found that when winter ends and spring starts it’s the equionox…..date march 20th…a day celebrated all over the entire world……..so istudied more on what this day was….it is when all life that died during winter will be -reborn-….the crops will start to grow and give life to the people…the bees start coming back..bears come out of hibernation…..it’s the rebirth of life itself…….then I was like….woah thats it…everything made sense. The adoption ceremony symbolized to the Saponi and Algonkians and probally other tribes, the rebirth of the dead……the reincarnation ned bearskin talked about and the adoption ceremony Speck spoke of…..the middle road between winter and spring Bear skin talked about…..the day spring and winter was one would have been the only time of the year that both the left and right roads would be aligned into one single path agian and thus allowing the left path walkers a chance to come back to earth. It all made sense. Many people travel to the Mayan’s structure to watch a amazing thing on March 20th…..they have a structure there that every equinox a shadow forms the image of a serpant along the side of the structure…..

Both sound like great reads, I will check them out:) I am currently reading a book I read a year or so ago, “Neither Wolf Nor Dog, Kent Nerburn. This is a very emotional read, one that is applicable to all cultures.
Thanks for your posts, will take some time to get through them, but seems you have been very busy. I am pretty solid on who I believe my Gibson’s were, though do not know for certain much before Orange, NC (where my martin was born), but their ties to the Collins, Mullins, Bunch etal, their travels across the NC/VA Piedmont to TN and KY, and how they were enumerated on censuses encourages me that I am on the right track:). My hunches say, they are the Chavis/Gibson’s and the idea of Portuguese mix is not discounted:)

Martin, Cheves, Collins, Vandermullen, Gibbs, etc are names found from the nc coastal tribe of Hatteras, Machapunga, and Bear river tribe.
All listed in nc coastal tribes in the late 1600’s and early 1700’s.
Winter? Not yet here, it was 72 degrees last weekend. But just give it a couple days, then its supposed to be down to zero degrees.
it is about 60-64 degrees here right now….was about that yesterday also…I was outside till about 3am.
cold and windy. no snow to mention but we do have some ice. 40s in the day and 20s at night. supposed to get a warm spell then some rain fri and sun. sat my wife and I are going to KCMO to a Christmas dinner dance. hope everyone who went got their deer this year. we laid 5 down so far.

OK, NOW its winter! For the past couple days we’ve had heavy snow and -8F this morning, with no end in sight. You can tell when a lot of offices have closed cause Walmart is always packed…
To dangerous to drive to work, but never to dangerous to drive to Walmart eh? I walked.
By the weather staion reports the Great Northwest is getting pounded. Good luck and hang in there. If there is any consolation we are getting our cold, snow, sleet, freezing rain and plenty of the cold wind right here in central MO.
