Spilleddi…we heard about the nasty weather out there. Hopefully, it won’t get this far…that’s a good thing about having the mountains, it breaks up a lot of storms as they come across. We have had the 3rd day of fog and rain. Temps are cool, but, tolerable, mostly 50s. Supposed to get to 70 tomorrow and then back to the colder temps next week. That’s the reason so many colds are passed around here……
Spilleddi and I don’t live too far apart, and let me tell you, this winter has been extreme. Today is a balmy +18F but it has been snowing HARD for over 30 hours. We’re paralyzed in my city from the massive snow. I shoveled 9″ last night and my wife and I teamed up on another 15″ this morning. There’s 2″ more on the ground and still snowing. Another Arctic front is scheduled to move in tonight, so the balmy temps won’t last long.
And that is the crap headed for us. We are predicted to have 6 to 9 inches of snow tonight mixed with freezing rain.

Well, we are starting the 4th day of fog and rain…..so many people refuse to slow down so there have been many wrecks and fatalities.
If we had that amount of snow, it would cripple our area. We just don’t have the equipment to handle that. And the same reason listed above would play a role there as well….people refuse to slow down or think they can get out and drive in the snow/sleet/ice.
Slowing down in any adverse conditions is a must. That mix of fog and rain can be as hazardous as snow because of visibility and stopping issues. I prefer not driving in fog, as most people drive much to fast for foggy conditions.
We’re not at all set up for this much snow. It was half our season average in 30 hours, effectively crippling the area for days. We’re set up for 4″ to 8″ at a time, not 2 feet or more. They’ve got some private contractors with graders helping out, so maybe the residential streets will get somewhat cleared before the next system hits Sunday or Monday.
Hi All, Well, hate to hear about you guys getting hit with that much snow. Here in Indiana it’s manageable, for now. We’ve had a couple of ice coatings this week. Last nite it was freezing rain, then after midnite it started to warm up. At 6:00 this a.m. it was 33 degs. By noon it was up to 50 degs. as the wind was coming up from the south. 4:00 the wind changed and came in from the west and dropped the temp to low 30s. It’s 32 now and supposed to get to low of 20. Then Sat we’re to expect an arctic blast~highs in the teens~lows ~7 to 8 with wind~chills 0 to 10 below till Tues. Then snow and cold. Indiana has the most variable weather year~round it seems. They say here, if you don’t like the weather, stick around, it’ll change~lol!! Good luck to you all in this Winter weather all across the country~~Later on~Greydove~:) ~^~ PS I know what you mean abt people who won’t slow down~it’s just so nerve~racking, especially when they think cause they drive big 4~wheel drives they won’t slide~I’ve seen em in the ditch after tail~gating me, then flying around~in such a big hurry~oh, well, I say easy does it~lol!!
Hi DAJ42, I think I know where you’re at. We don’t have it quite as bad, but the snow and temps are still breaking records. More than 2 or 3 inches of snow here is unusual, I stopped counting at 20 inches. Some years we don’t have any snow, so the infrastructure can’t handle it and most folks don’t even have snowshovels. I’ve taken to hiking around the neighborhood in snowshoes. My office has been closed all or part of the day the entire week and the load on my roof has ripped off some of the gutters. On the bright side, I’m getting a lot of exercise snowshoeing and shoveling. And of course more posts on Saponitown with all my free time.
I do a lot of winter driving in the mountains for work and am very careful. Packed snow isn’t too bad, it’s the freezing rain and freezing fog that are the real killers here. Actually, the worst pileups on the freeway have been from dust storms in summer. Its again below zero and snowing, it’ll be like this for at least another week.
I’m driving a couple hundred miles for Christmas, as long as the road is open I’m going. I always carry several days worth of food and water in my car, several sleeping bags and blankets, a pillow, extra clothes, matches, shovel, flashlights with extra batteries, and fluorescent orange flagging among other things. Also a coffee can with a candle in it can provide warmth if trapped in the snow in your car. I only been stuck in the snow over night on the side of the freeway once, I was quite comfortable. You can’t relay on cell phone service around here if you get stuck. I know folks that have been stuck in the snow for days.
We always carry that type of gear in our vehicles, too. I also add one of those foil, not mylar, space blankets. Huddling underneath that with a candle is really toasty. The coffee can radiates the heat even better.

Come take this nasty winter weather back up to the Northwest. It is FREEEEZING here. 😮 The temperature is 3°F and with windchill it is -20°F. It’s ridiculous. I hate the cold. I like snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Other than that bring on the sunshine and 90+ degree temps.

Ah yes, it was a balmy 3F here today as well. At least at those temps you don’t have to worry about freezing rain. Thats what kills the power.

Yup, another 9″ since 3:00 p.m. Sunday. While I really don’t wish this weather on anybody, where the storm tracks after leaving here is, unfortunately, out of my control. Good luck downwind. 😉
Snow plows came by Saturday night. As a result, the sidewalks and driveways were plugged shut. Sunday’s neighborhood project was to dig out from that. As most of the neighbors teamed up, it was as enjoyable as possible.
Well, we may hit 36 today with it back in the teens tonight….but, at least we have no precip. With any luck the temps will be back to normal by Christmas. We usually get our worst weather in Jan & Feb. I am like you Tanya, I keep blankets in the car, and usually some type of food, water. Not that I have to worry about being stranded in snow…but, with almost 300,000 on the van, there’s always a possibility of a breakdown. And sitting on the side of the road waiting for AAA with an infant….gotta be prepared. There have been people here who have died when their car went offroad due to a deer or any type accident…and haven’t been found for days. Have to keep in mind that our area has quite a bit of vegetation on the side of the road….you can keep the snow….unless it comes in the middle of the night after Christmas and I won’t have to drive home in it.
