There’s a Chinquapin in Augusta County, VA.
And a tree called chinquapin or chinkapin – a small shrubby tree related to the chestnut. Peattie, “A Natural History of Trees of Eastern and Central North America” says “The first mention to be found of the Chinquapin is in Captain John Smith’s account of Virginia.”

Following our violent January thaw, we’ve had well over a week of freezing fog. Some outlying towns will experience this until next week. Power outages are abounding. Driving to the Rez last Thursday night was surreal: went through 2 towns that had power out due to the fog. Other than utility workers in the 2nd town, our car was the only sign of life. It was like being in a Twilight Zone episode. And in Twilight Zone, the utility workers in the fog are never innocent utility workers. My wife kept expecting Dracula to pounce on the car. As we were going to a funeral, the entire eeriness was fitting.
I’ll take our freezing fog over that -38 degree stuff, however.
Our snowpack? Most roofs are bare. Yards in my neighborhood have anywhere from 12 to 30 inches of solid white ice that used to be snow until the thaw and freeze. At least the streets and sidewalks are clear.

I would not like -30anything. I really don’t care for the temp to go below 30. I’m glad it is supposed to be in the 60’s tomorrow, actually today now, because we have a funeral and burial at about 1:30 pm today.

Well, I enjoyed the few inches of snow we got this week…sure made some beautiful scenery. Can’t say I’m glad about the cold weather….of course today will be the first day where the temp will be above freezing since about last week. I know the creatures will be glad to finally have fresh water that is thawed….and supposed to warm up and have rain this weekend….like they say about NC…don’t like the weather?? Just wait a few hours and it will change….
Hi All, Last wk per my post 1/20 was a forecast for a winter storm brewing to hit us around the beginning of this wk and forecastors didn’t know if it would be rain or snow~ well, it’s snow. It was a 2~puch hit that we missed out on the first punch yesterday morning~it went south of us here in Indiana. But 2nd punch got us good! Started snowing yesterday at noon and continued till today at noon, dumping 8-10″s on my area~ Indpls~12 1/2″s around airport. At noon news today the forecastors said it was the worse snow we’ve had round here in 13 yrs. The worse one I remember was the blizzard of ’78. Hey Bob~(Cherosage)~heard yesterday, you guys in MO. got hit with the 1st punch of this storm and had “thunder snow” with snow, then layer of ice, then snow. We had a layer ice in between our snow, but~thunder snow? What was that like? Did you get hit with the 2nd punch, too? Take care everyone~be safe, stay warm, and be careful~ Later, 🙂 ~Greydove~^~
thunder snow storms are kinda like a regular thunder storm but with snow. Normally not a violent thing. Just a Flash and boom now and then. Happens every so often. Not a regular thing though. Does anyone else have these Thunder and Lightening with your snow.
We just finished up a series of freezing rain/sleet/snow/freezing rain/sleet/ snow/ snow/ freezing rain/ snow……….. and real cold with (-) wind chill. I have used more wood this year than in the past few years. I think I’m going to have to go and cut more wood.

Although it is cold today (14 degrees right now) there is a thaw expected by the end of this week. Up to the mid 40s and low 50s by this weekend for Ohio! I know it maybe temporary (Buckeye Chuck – the groundhog – predicted six more weeks of winter ;)) but at least it will help melt away the ice in our parking lot. I am tired of sliding to my car.:eek:
We were “supposed” to get 2-4 inches of snow…over night last night….to my surprise this morning, I woke up to nothing….it went east of us and the folks that weren’t supposed to get anything, got quite a bit. It is still cold, and we will have one more day of barely above freezing before it gets quite balmy….up to 70s on Sunday. You better believe that there will be quite a few sick folks with the weather yo-yoing like this.
Our local groundhog saw his shadow….six more weeks of winter….and it will be in the 60s and 70s this next week….ookay. Think I will depend more on watching the cats wash…..they were both correct when they were washing behind their ears right before the last snow.

Cold tonight, this morning, only to warm up significantly into maybe just maybe the 60’s. This is Thurs I’m talking about. I WILL have to go cut some more wood. I hope not much more than a cord. Actually less is best.

Hi guys, how many of the rest of you all are still digging out. I hope no one got hurt from the tornados down there in Georgia, Alabama area. They were sproutiing up all around my sister in law. She lives around Ft. Benning.
Yikes, I’m glad we don’t get tornados here. I’m probably more in danger from volcanoes than tornados. But we’ve had snow, freezing fog, and lots of rain with minor flooding, the usual for this time of year. Its the ice storms and freezing fog that are the worst, many rigs slide of the road due to that, and it can tear down power lines.
But the wild celery has come up, so spring is coming! Yeehaaaw!
I am in South Carolina right now. We came through the snow in NC but had little trouble as it was the day after and we were on main roads. What I want to know is: what happened? The reason we have conferences down south is to get away from this!
Funny though how the snow was there in measurable depth and then immediately not there at all.
