I noticed a lot of Nicholas, County in your post…a lot of my father’s family still lives there. My great Grandma & Grandpa came there in the early 1900’s, before that they were in the Grundy area, VA. Sounds like we have more than just surnames in common…:)

Hi Shirley & All 🙂 How’s everyone? Fine, I hope. Found some interesting links..mostly abt genealogy & mostly abt NDN. http://www.americanindians.com http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/index.html And I know this is Michigan, but it caught my eye abt a Wm Hart ..son Samuel..(speculation..couldv’t gone up there to avoid removal? Anyway it has some neat info… http://clarke.cmich.edu/indianfamilyhistory/history2.htm Also this might be irrellivant, but this link caught my eye,too as it refers to…Cherokee Chief Chulioa, Shoeboot (Tuskingo/Tahsee-key-yaw-ga) … Ross and Eliza(Ross born 1848…indian names dasigiyagi…One is Chief Chulio Shoe Boots, Tuscorosa, and…son of unkown Richardson and unknown Hart…This link might not be rellivant(sp) but maybe to someone, any way it’s kinda neat.. http://www103.pair.com/adsd/family/mary/richardson/indian-document-messages.html Hope this will help someone:) Also, I will try to attach a couple pics of my Grandfather William Harrison Fitzwater when he was in his 40s He is the dark-complected man with thick wavy hair in white t-shirt and light tan slacks in one pic. the other is him sitting on ground holding my cousin (one of his grandchildren) Hopes this works if not I’ll try again some other time 😀 Peace~~^~~Greydove The younger darkhaired lady is my Dad’s sister and the heavy-set woman and white-haired man are her in-laws. The lady standing next my Grandfather is my Grandmother Charolotte. Later
November 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm #29645Thanks Greydove for the links, they are great! I was curious about the Michigan State link…are the names in Ojibwa?? That is what it looks like to me. Anyone else know??

November 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm #29648Hey Shirley! I didn’t pick up on Ojibwa but I guess I’m more or less looking at NDN. Anyway I kinda wanted to know, did you check out my Grandfather’s pic? I couldn’t believe how NDN he looked, but I just got these pics from my cousin’s dau., the baby in the pics was Deanna Durbin, my 1st cousin and her dau, sent me these pics. This was abt 20 yrs before I was born and I don’t remember him like that. He told me his Grandmother was NDN and he died when I was barely 14. Anyway, I am down at my Son’s place right now and his NDN name is Whitehawk –he used dance at pow-wows as a “Fancy-Dancer”. Well, I’ll comunicate with ya’ll –Later;) Love~~^~~Greydove

Hello Greydove,
Beautiful pictures, to have such links to the past is a blessing! I only have a handful, but if I get to my g-aunt Betty Jean’s this summer, I hope to get more. My family says I look just like her, I can’t wait to see. I met my g-aunt Wave this last summer and there is no doubt, we’re kin:) Is your grandfather the one that is said to be Blackfoot?
Your son is a fancy dancer, wow! You must be proud.:) Larry Yazzy was in town in September of last year, I took the kids…they loved his dancing and his son Jessup dances as well and is very good! He is the same age as my Olivia, she would love to dance, but the opportunity does not come up often.

November 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm #29656Hi Sammaroq! Thanks for reply abt pics. Yes, it is a blessing, don’t have many, got some of my Dad if I can find them. Yes, my Grandfather is the one and he was born at Nicolas VA Jul. 31, 1889. They moved here to Indiana when he was abt 7. And, I said that pic was 20 yrs before I was born (I need to use better math My cousin (the baby in the pic) is abt 8 yrs older than me. Anyway, how nice you were able to go to that pow wow. I haven’t been for a long time. I may plan a trip to VA in early summer to do some record searches and if I do I may try to plan it around a pow wow. My son hasn’t danced for a long time either. His best friend died and he was also a Fancy-Dancer, they used to dance together. His name was John Deere and he was adopted off the rez. He was Kiowa. Maybe my son will dance again for John. Just found out “Lost My Heart At Wounded Knee” is coming on at 12:30. Gonna watch it before Super Bowl. Take care and best wishes, ~~^~~Greydove 😀
November 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm #29658Hi All! I hadn’t seen this version of that terrible time of Wounded Knee. Made me very sad. Also, it confirmed for me the practice of the NDNs having to choose English names from mostly the Bible. I have alot of Biblic names back in my tree. Hosea, Moses, Elisha, Isaac etc. and names after prominent people like alot of George Washington (surname) and GreatGrandmas Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth etc. Anyway, the movie helped me understand alot more than I did. Thanks for alowing me to be a part of this forum, especially to you Linda. Peace ~~^~~Greydove
November 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm #29664While you were watching Wounded Knee, I was collecting three 4′ high stacks of soft, warm fleece blankets made by middle schoolers as their service project for my trip to Pine Ridge in a few weeks. Not an atonement for Wounded Knee by any means, but these blankets will likely be useful. I was overwhelmed by the generosity, not to mention by mounds of blankets!

PS: There is a good 10 minute video on Wounded Knee on youtube. Just search for Wounded Knee and click on the two children.

Hello Techteach! Thanks for the direction to the utube video. I think it is very commendable that you are doing what you do, abt the blankets and all. You are not only talking the talk, you are walking the walk. I think that is beautiful. Take care and go with safety on your trip. Peace~^~Greydove
November 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm #29675Hello Everyone! Here are a couple of link to search surnames. Peace~^~Greydove http://mysite.verizon.net/spentink http://www.genforum.com
November 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm #29752Hello All! Found a neat link chock-full of a variety of ndn info. Main Title “Native American Way” Hey Sammarroq-Shirley! Nice links on Share History Research. I especially liked the rosecowgirl tripod link. I get facinated by those websites that have tracers following your cursor-lol But alot of good info there. I found this link while searching for Blackfoot Harts. Haven’t found that yet, but hopefully, in time. Oh, I did link up with a dist cuz on Ancestry.com who has Native American listed as lineage on her profile. I had already visited her tree but she invited me to visit. She is in GA. Everyone have a great wkend.! 😉 Peace~^~Greydove http://www.legendarysurfers.com/naw
November 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm #29822Hi All I am so exited to share this with everyone. This may not be much to go on but anything is better than zero. I got a reply from a Hart message board from a lady that thinks her husband & I may be related through the Harts. He is a Hart. She told me her husbands mother told her that their ndn connection was Blackfoot & Crow. Like I said, this may not be much to go on, but at least it narrows the search for me. She said she has not researched the ndn ancestry yet, but will now. I told her I would share what I have, which isn’t alot, but starting with me I have Harts back 5 generations to Samuel Hart b 1792 VA. Take care all and walk in beauty & Peace~^~Greydove PS Ironically, I got an email from my Aunt last nite that was a Guardian Angel and the message was that I would hear something I have been wanting to know within the next day. Then I had an email alert that a reply was on my query on the Hart board. I am ecstatic!!:)
November 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm #29823Hart:
I am so excited for you. Let me know what you find out!! I am not sure, can not remember, if Samuel Hart was also related to Stephen Hart. I am excited to after two and a half years, I found this clip by the author: Laura Tierrney–
My Great Mamaw was Cherokee. Her mothers name was Sarah Hart.My great mamaw was Amanda Elizibeth Hart.I think her fathers name was John Hart. She remembered coming from Virginia ,as a child. Her parents spoke Cherokee, and My father remembered this as a child. They now reside in Eastern Kentucky.I would like to have some information, but it is not a necesary,as I know who ,and where I came from.I do not need a validation as I feel it in my soul.I am proud from the strong people that are my ancestors.
My response to her clip:I feel like we have covered some major ground here! We know what we are; we just need to tie up the loose ends. Blessings! Grey Dove!
November 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm #29828Sandra, every time I see your picture, I can’t believe how much you resemble my dad’s oldest sister.
